I'll say this - if the OP is in fact a who sock pukeit it kinda pisses me off. I resent taking the time to respond to such a one as that.  If they are a "real" person it is wrong to accuse them but if you have access to behind the curtain knowledge and know this is a farce they should be banned.

Its difficult to be a first time poster and come to a forum like fornits and ask for advice like Torn has.  If you feel the person should be banned if they are a sock puppet you should also want the person banned who accuses others without having the facts.  Why chase people away from this forum?  Why should we support posters like DJ maximillian etc who try to control all the dialog and decide who is legitimate and who isnt?  They post lists of aliases which have no bases or facts to support them.  I think it would be best for everyone and the forum if people take their suspicions to the admins via PM's vs feeding paranoia in each thread and chasing away every new guy that comes along.  That way if the OP is an imposter than the admins can handle it in a manner that best suits the forum or expose them at that time.
Whether the OP is an imposter or not does not matter to me personally because it generated a good discussion, but more importantly we should not risk chasing a new member of fornits off the board.

...

Oh, lordy.  Not this guy again.  I thought he was banned?

The problem is, Chris may be putting MSW behind his name on e-mails, the school only list him as the Executive Director, with no Alphabet soup behind his name.

Here's a snapshot of Chris Grimwood's phony credentials from the Ridge Creek website where they list him as an "MSW":

There is actually quite a profound difference between learning to modify one's external behavior, and revamping one's internal psyche and self-identity. Especially when that latter process involves a "break them down, then build them back up" modus operandi that is imposed on one by others. I don't think you'll find many professionals who'd equate these two processes.

This is a very good point and well taken.  I also believe you would not find a single professional willing to equate toilet training with troubled teen program behavior modification, despite the protestations of your resident "forum troll" who seems bent on disrupting the converstaion about this abused boy's subsequent criminal behavior.

Victims of abuse often lie.  Usually they lie to minimize the abuse or protect their abusers.

As a rule of thumb, I would be inclined to believe that, whatever a child tells about how they were abused, it was likely worse than their retelling.  Abused children are not generally malingerers.  In fact, it is usually the opposite.

So when I hear a child's claims of abuse, I am inclined to not only believe them, but to seek out additional facts about the abuse because children often make it seem less harmful, damaging or extensive than it actually was.

Whooter has, in the past, repeatedly likened the behavior modification used in programs (i.e., thought reform) to the behavior modification used in toilet training.

As someone who studies this professionally, I can assure you that these two types of "behavior modification" are vastly different.  This analogy is obtuse at best.

Toilet training obvioulsy is not "behavior modification."  It is exactly what its name implies: training.  The child has no knowledge of toileting and is trained to use the potty.  This is completely different from modifying the behavior of adults and subadults who already have certain views and understandings of the world and their place in it.  They behave according to their own paradigms that they realized over a long time via experience.

Changing the ingrained behaviors of this set of people is a completely different ballgame than teaching a youngster to use the potty.

The Troubled Teen Industry / Why Do Programs Abuse Children?
« on: November 02, 2010, 11:20:16 AM »
I have seen a lot of discussion here about children being abused by "programs" and program staff.  It has been well established that most, if not all, "troubled teen programs" use abusive tactics as a method of control.

I would like to hear from people who went to programs about why they think the programs made the decision to use abuse rather than legitimate treatment.  Clearly, to my mind, this is a business decision.  So it begs the question "Why is child abuse good for troubled teen businesses?"

Please limit responses to those who have attended programs and can comment on first-hand experiences.  Thanks.

I'm glad to see that all have reached consensus that kids who went to "programs" were in fact abused.  Abuse victims often lie about their abuse and their abusers.  This is a well-established psychological pehnomenon.

I think it's more important to get to the root of the issue, however:  "Why do programs abuse children in their care"?  I think this would help to answer the question of "why the abused lie."

At my program it was all the same kind of stuff as well.

Coercion through rationing of food, sleep deprivation, forcing you to remain in the same position indefinitely, forced labor, forced PT, coercion therapy, restricted communication et cet. The list goes on and on.

This is terrible, but seems par for the course in these programs.  Which program did this to you, RobertBruce?

I have only researched similar facilities and services.

Thank you for the answer. I really hope you do it justice and help bring to light what I believe kids are up against when placed in "programs".  Good luck with your research.

Thank you, Anne Bonney.  I'm still reading and looking to gather some more information.

I believe that's probably true.  Bullying is certainly a learned behavior, but I'm assuming you are an adult and if so, bullying is your choice of behavior and you voluntarily engaged in it.

As I read through this thread I was actually quite shocked.  This also fits into some feedback I read on another thread that "pro-program" posters tend to act like other posters are "still in the program" and, in a sense, try to control them here as they were controlled in the program.  That is a basic summation of this entire thread and demonstrative of the topic.

From what I have seen, the pro-program posters have no real limits on what they are willing to do or say to try to control or invalidate the abuse victims that post here.  I find this to be more than a bit scary because in the program these same personalities have physical access to their victims where the abuse could be much more serious.

I could not disagree more, Che Gookin.  I find this thread absolutely informative and completely fascinating.  To an outside reader it is quite clear what the dynamic is here.  The thread is properly titled and the behavior of the "pro-program" poster is perfectly described.  This person has gone to great lengths in order to invalidate the experiences of the abused.  His approach and tactics are designed to completely destroy others' credibility through purposeful slander and bullying.  If you can't see this then you are probably not reading objectively.  To me, it's as clear as the nose on my face.

Shady's description of calls were the same for CEDU. Except it was every two weeks. Phones were locked in an office; a staff member sat beside you. You were not free to talk openly. If you even said something slightly negative, you'd never make that mistake again.

I haven't seen this censoring of communication described yet in the thread "How Was Compliance Gained?"  Would you mind coming over to that thread and detailing how the communication was controlled as a means of controlling you?

Hi.

I was in a troubled teen program run by Three Springs called New Beginnings in Owens Cross Roads, AL.

I have written about my experiences there in another thread on this forum: http://http://www.fornits.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=72&t=31043

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have, either publicly or in private message.

Thank you, Hedge.  I will be reading, commenting and asking questions.  Please feel free to add your thoughts to the other topical threads I introduced.
