Title: NORDSTROMS HAS A KWANZAA HOLIDAY GIFT CARD!
Post by: CCM girl 1989 on December 01, 2005, 04:50:00 PM
I was online purchasing a gift certificate for my lawyer who is actually jewish, when I came across the Kwanzaa gift card. Does anybody here besides me think that's just a wee bit funny? I'd love to hear some thoughts from you all. I didn't even think it was a real holiday???

That is some funny shit, it's not even a religous holiday. It's just like when you had some people out in Oakland California trying to make ebonics an official language!

Okay, thats cool if you want to have a day (or week, whatever), dedicated to celebrating your heritage.  But if you are serious about it, and would like everyone to recognize and even participate in your holiday, WHY would you make that holiday in December???  There's just too much other stuff going on.

The Irish have their holiday in March.

I dunno, the Romans moved Christ's birthday to December so that it would coincide with their holiday of debauchery, the Saturnalia, so it's not like it hasn't been done before.

Dude, we should so totally bring back Saturnalia.

I'm white and I've celebrated Kwanzaa for about 10 years.  I smoke crack, play tunk (card game the brothers in jail like to play), drink Cisco, wear gold chains, and listen to hip-hop.  You think I'm kidding?  Kwanzaa's one of my favorite holidays, I really enjoy that crack......

Do you think African-Americans made this holiday in December just out of spite?  If not, they should have made in some other time during the year, so that more people might get involved and learn about it and even celebrate.

Are you freaking kidding me? Do you even know anything about Kwanzaa and it's pillars of virtues and gratitude that have little to do with the gross materialism that is now Christmas?

This is not a holiday founded from spite. It is a rejection of materialism and a celebration of the true gifts of life. (Although that will probably change if Nordstrom has the card.)

I have friends whose families celebrate Kwanzaa, and it has real meaning.

And like the other poster attested, our other Christian holidays did not really occur when Jesus was born or died.  They were pagan rituals that were remade into Christian ones to pave the way for conversion.

But who the fuck cares? Santa Claus is coming to town, whether you are naughty or nice.

I'm not saying that Kwanza doesn't have real meaning- but I think that they should celebrate it some other time during the year.

Most African-Americans I know do not celebrate it, b/c they celebrate xmas, or whatever.  More people would celebrate if they just held it in a different month.

I agree with you. I'm not sure why they are trying to compete with Christmas? I know this holiday was started 40 years ago. So, basically 1965 when we were having a lot of racial issues. Who knows, maybe I'd even take the time to celebrate it, if it was in a different month?

I'm sure there is a reason why its celebrated in December.  I know one family who specifically appreciate celebrating it in December because they want to be reminded of real values (which you celebrate each day of Kwanzaa), rejecting the gross consumerism and holiday hijacking from Hallmark and other vendors.

What's all the fuss? Competition???? Check your racism.
Did you read the link provided? Not to worry, unless you're black, the holdiay/celebration wasn't intended for you or to usurp Xmas.

http://www.holidays.net/kwanzaa/story.htm (http://www.holidays.net/kwanzaa/story.htm)

Kwanzaa begins on December 26th, the day after Christmas, and continues until New Years Day, January 1st.

On the sixth day, which falls on New Years Eve, family and friends get together to enjoy a large feast and to celebrate their history, culture, and the upcoming new year.

Dr. Karenga wanted to create a holiday [1966] that would bring AFRICAN AMERICANS together in CELEBRATION OF THEIR BLACK CULTURE.

The dates of the celebration, December 26 - January 1, were chosen to correspond to the end of the year celebrations in America. Kwanzaa begins the day after Christmas. This to bypass the commercial buying period but to take advantage of the seasonal holiday spirit.

I DID read the link provided- thank you!  Kwanza sounds like a very positive, life-affirming celebration.  But why have this celebration at a time when there is so much else going on?

You don't have to be a "Christian" to appreciate Jesus or to celebrate Christmas.  I am surely not a "Christian", but I look to Jesus for inspiration, especially in doing my work as a nurse.  And I enjoy Christmas, to spend time with my family, and I like to give gifts- things people will enjoy, as a token of my love.

I am not African-American either, but if Kwanza were held at a different time, (February seems appropriate), I would enjoy taking the time to participate in the celebration.

I have lots of African-American, and African, friends, most of whom ARE Christian, they celebrate Christmas and New Years, and consequently do not have the time to get very much involved with Kwanza.

My family is Irish-American, and EVERYONE likes to celebrate St. Patricks day, and it's in March, so theres a lot more involvement than there would be if we held it in December.

I still don't get why YOU are so concerned about a holiday that doesn't effect you.
How much time does it really take to light a candle and discuss one of the 7 principals- unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith?
Actually sounds like a good wind-down after the gross explosion of materialism at xmas and before the new year. It's not like he made December, Black History Month.
How about Hanukkah? Starts on Xmas day this year, but usually falls during the height of shopping for the established 'christian' holiday. But all the c/j families I know, who it's important to, seem to manage both.
I just don't think it's appropriate, and could be unaware racism, for white people to complain about where blacks decide to schedule THEIR celebrations.

Great, people are ripping off my niles avatar

They serve so that we don't have to. They offer to give up their lives so that we can be free. It is, remarkably, their gift to us. And all they ask for in return is that we never send them into harm's way unless it is absolutely necessary. Will they ever trust us again?

All? Like all white people are oppressive slave owners?
When one is systematically beaten down, there's bound to be some backlash. Consider it pay back.

Payback for what?

My family used to live in a nice neighborhood.  After 50 years, it became so bad, we had to sell our family home.
Who do you suppose brought crime to our neighborhood, who broke into our house 3 times, and mugged my grandmother on the street?  I'll give you one guess.
Not that I blame every person for this- I know better than to dish out any sort of "payback" to any race-as-a-whole.
But those who don't work, live off the dole, don't get educated, throw garbage on the streets, steal from other people, and TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY will reap "payback" of their own.

Not a place I would want to live in. So sorry, but the majority of black people are dangerous. It's something genetic, something that they cannot change.

A place i'd stay far away from. I was a white minority at the junior high school I went to and the blacks love to 'get revenge' on whites for us controlling the world, or whatever they think it is we have that they don't. IMO, blacks are more racist than whites, because they are seeking revenge.

No!  My dad is from the Bronx, and he's "white", but he was forced to sell his family home 10 years ago because of the crime that the African-Americans brought to the area.  It was a beautiful brownstone house with stained glass windows.  Who knows whats become of it now...it could be a crackhouse.

But damm... I'm glad no one in my family is from a trailer park.  That would be embarrassing.

I don't hear any Jews complaining that Christian white people stole their Hannukah season.

This all just seems like a racist attack.  I mean, why else would you really care?  Did someone not show up to your Christmas party because it interfered with their Kwanzaa celebration?  So, if Kwanzaa was in February, you'd celebrate it?  How do you celebrate Black History Month in February?  How do you celebrate MLK, Jr. day in mid-January?  You don't, that's how.

It's disappointing to read such thought-out points of view on the "teen help" industry, and then read such disgusting racism on the same forum.

Blechhh!!!

Dude, I don't care when Kwaanza is....  I am not Christian, I'm not black, I'm not Jewish...

I just think it is an interesting note that Kwanza is celebrated the same time as all these other holidays, and wondered if maybe people would get more involved in it if it were at some other time.

Why are some people so damn sensitive?  I'm not Christian, but I don't get offended when people say "Merry Christmas".  Whatever!
