Title: Benchmark Young Adult School > Parents think twice
Post by: Anonymous on April 26, 2009, 11:13:56 PM
Benchmark Young Adult School runs a workshop called the "Friendship Workshop."  The workshop starts at 9:00 p.m. and ends between 9:00 a.m. - noon the next day.  Staff allow students one nap (very little sleep) during workshop hours.  This doesn't create an optimal learning environment for students.

Students are also forbidden to talk about the details of the workshop outside (this includes taking to parents)...   though I believe the restriction is lifted with parents after they go through their parent seminar.

The problem here is a lack of informed consent.  Kids going into friendship workshop have no idea what will be going on and thus cannot consent to what goes on, including ritual humiliation similar of the sort recently discussed in the time magazine article on Mount Bachelors Academy.

Benchmark's trademarked version of "break 'em down, re-build 'em up?"

"One 18-year-old former student and victim of rape wept while recounting what happened to her during a Lifesteps seminar. Jane, who asked not to be identified by her real name, left the school in March. "They had me dress up as a French maid," she said, describing an outfit that included fishnet stockings and a short skirt. "I had to sit on guys' laps and give them lap dances," while sexually suggestive songs, like "Milkshake" by Kelis, played at high volume.

Lifesteeps seminar = Friensship workshop

point is it creates very effective results very quickly ...  with very little regard for any sorts of ethics

at CEDU it was called "propheets".  Search on this site for Propheets and you'll find quite a bit.
