Title: CEDU back up and running?
Post by: Anonymous on December 01, 2005, 05:19:00 PM
Does anyone know if the schools have indeed reopened? I know they were scheduled to open in like November, I think, but I haven't heard any word about anything. Just wondering if anyone has inside information.

I know BCA is open. Talked to one of the teachers there who got her job back. There are four kids on campus.

CEDU Properties Sold
CEDU's parent,  Brown Schools, declared bankruptcy in March, stranding kids over Easter weekend.

Brown Schools Bankruptcy Trustee George Miller held the auction in Philadelphia on August 11, 2005

Chabad of Los Angeles  purchased the Running Springs, California campus for $4.3 million, according to the Lake Arrowhead Mountain News
Universal Health Services purchased the majority of Brown's Northwest properties for $10 million, according to the Bonner County Daily Bee, or $13.5 million, according to the New York Times.
The properties and programs included in the bid are the former Ascent Therapeutic Adventure Program, Boulder Creek Academy, Rocky Mountain Academy and Northwest Academy.

Milestones Transitional Program was not included in the bid because it's tied up in litigation.

The King George School (the only program that did not shut down because of the bankruptcy) in Vermont was also in the auction. Results of the auction haven't been published yet that I can find.  A group of parents is hoping to keep the school going.  The minimum bid was set at $3.5 million.
I wonder if any of the parents who pre-paid tuition will get their money back.  I wonder if the CEDU staff, who were owed three weeks' pay, will get any money.

On August 17 2005,  Louise Story published an article in the New York Times entitled "A Business Built on the Troubles of Teenagers" in which she wrote:

Universal Health Services, the hospital management company, acquired 12 properties from Charter Behavioral Health Systems for $105 million in 2000. That acquisition included the Provo Canyon School in Utah, which has been around since the 1970's as a help center for teens.

The company is set to take over several therapeutic schools that were run by CEDU Education, the earliest large company in therapeutic teenage help and a branch of Brown Schools, now bankrupt. Brown, which was based in North Palm Beach, Fla., went bankrupt in March largely because of lingering legal costs from lawsuits filed by several former students, said a spokesman for McCown De Leeuw, the private equity firm that owned Brown. Universal Health's bid of $13.35 million for the properties has been accepted by the bankruptcy judge, and the sale is expected to close at the end of the month, said George L. Miller, a partner at Miller Coffey Tate in Philadelphia and the bankruptcy trustee for Brown.

As to the reopenning, this was written in the bonners ferry herald

Former CEDU schools to open

By ELIZABETH CIEPIELA
Staff Writer

Universal Health Services is rehiring former CEDU staff, applying for a state license, fixing buildings and recruiting students in preparation for opening the schools under the name Idaho Educational Services.
The start date is set tentatively for Nov. 1.
"Since the time of the bankruptcy its been a tenuous time for students and staff alike. Most students have gone on to find placement or have gone on home. However, there's a few that may re-enroll in the schools. We have been talking with consultants regarding different families to see if we would be an appropriate place for any children," said Paul Johnson, executive director of Boulder Creek Academy.
Accumulating the same number of staff the schools had at the time of the March bankruptcy will probably be a two-year process.
Combined staff will number 60 to 70 by year's end, 152 by the end of 2006 and 200 by the end of 2007, said Tai Kemonick, IES Director of Human Resources for North Idaho.
To date, 42 former CEDU staff have been hired for IES, mostly in top management positions, Kemonick said. The supervisor for the properties is Bob Deney, the western regional vice president for UHS. Monday, seven previous Ascent employees were hired.
"They are very much committed to using folks in this community," Johnson said of UHS. "They want to have safe programs."
Johnson has been hired as executive director of Boulder Creek Academy; Ruth McKnight has been hired as executive director of Northwest Academy; and Denise Forbregd has been hired as executive director of the Ascent Wilderness Program. The school formerly known as Rocky Mountain Academy will remain closed for approximately one year while staff research the appropriate market niche, said Director of Business Operations Doug McKnight, who is helping get the schools licensed.
"We've already gotten calls from parents who had this crisis going on. It's an immediate enrollment," Forbregd said of Ascent.
While IES staff anticipate Ascent to open between Oct. 17 and Nov. 1, the other two programs are tentatively set to open Nov.1.
Enrollment will grow slowly: Boulder Creek Academy will begin with four students and bring in an additional approximate three to four youth per month. The academy should have 42 enrolled by the end of 2006.
Northwest Academy is projected to start with four youth in November and end 2006 at 51, while Ascent is projected to begin in October with seven, and end 2006 with 31.
"Its definitely great news," Boundary County Economic Development Coordinator Robin Ponsness said. "It's going to be great for our local economy to have it back up and running. These jobs are important because they're professional jobs."
Once the schools open again, Johnson hopes for one more positive change: He wants the therapeutic schools to have more of a connection with the community. He hopes students doing community service projects can directly affect and help those in need.

Hope this helped answer your question...
-Joe

That's old news. It didn't actually open until a couple weeks ago, but it's no longer "CEDU Schools to Re-Open"...it's "CEDU Schools are FUCKIN' OPEN BITCH!"

Cedu Running Springs is now a Hebrew religious
retreat, so the original Cedu "School" will
never be open again!

By the way, Having 1 staff and 4 students doesn't mean that "Cedu Schools are back open",
it's really more like a Cedu Club at this point!

What a joke!

There will be more though. UHS just needs to beef up their advertising campaign. The demand is out there.  People in the US just love their EG boarding schools.

Well then it sucks to be Brandi!

Seriously, it in fact is true that the jews own Cedu running springs again, and they are indeed turning it into some sort of "hebrews only" religious retreat.  As I understand it,Non-Jews  aren't even allowed to visit the campus.  This means that most of the brainwashed, die-hard, cedu sheep will be denied a shrine to rally around.

That's great news, because at least things in Running Springs are as they should be.

I went to CEDU RS campus last week and the place is a ghost town.  The Jewish organization Chabad that bought the place in August, and who claimed they would have it up and running for christmas retreats is not happening.  The pool is full of water and leaves just as it's about to snow up there.  The buildings look in dire need of a paint job and the whole place looks run down/deserted.  They haven't even taken down the welcome to CEDU signs.  I doubt this place will be reopen as a school or anything, anytime soon.

Fuck Chabad. Chabad are a bunch of motherfuckers. They used to have the best little chicken shack across from the beach here and everyone would hit it up after riding all day. But the Chabad next door complained and got them kicked out. If Chabad opens that place up, I'm gonna fuck with them everytime I cruise by RS to ride at big bear.

When I first got to BCA everyone told me different reasons why it sucked, but they all agreed John K was the shit. They said to just avoid all staff but him..they couldn't get you in tooo much trouble for that.

Jesus Christ, Linda Daggy is still with them? She's the only one on that list who was around when I was.

When I was there, she didn't have her therapist's license yet. I guess I should give her marks for actually bothering to get credentials, and I actually liked her when I was there (but then again, I was pretty much brainwashed) but I could see her being a total complicit milquetoast and rather clueless, too. I guess that's kind of obvious, since she was willing to stick with the program for so long.
