Title: Willie Nelson tribute thread
Post by: shaggys on December 30, 2010, 07:26:29 PM
This thread is dedicated to the living American legend, Willie Nelson. I want to invite everyone to post their favorite Willie songs/lyrics, Willie stories, trivia etc.
So Willie just got picked up again for weed possesion in Texas. The cops searched his tour bus and found Willie's stash as well as that of his entire crew. It was a hefty haul for the local redneck cops that did it. Did you know that Willie went out of his way to claim resposibility for the entire stash so that the cops would only arrest him and let his crew go. Thats right, Willie took the rap so his buddies could slide. As if i didn't already love this man enough. He takes it on the chin so that his roadies wont have to spend the night in jail with him. Realizing the potential public relations nightmare this arrest represented for the police dept, Willie was released from custody pretty quickly.

The first song that hooked me on Willie's music was Angel Flyin Too Close To The Ground. It remains one of my favorites.
"So I patched up your broken wing
And hung around awhile
Trying to keep your spirits up
And your fever down
But I knew someday that you would fly away
cause loves the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel Flyin too close to the ground"

Willie Nelson is well known for his generosity. It landed him in trouble with the IRS years back when he was giving away more than he earned. People would hit him up with a hard luck story and he would write a check. I'm so glad that he has made all that $ back and so much much more. He deserves it.

as i recall, when  willie had so much riff with the irs ,theyauctioned off all his property. Some wealthy fan bought the property willie grew up on,at auction, and fuckin gave it back to willie.
Now weather other people like it or not  Ive been sort of a fan of willie for the better part of 35 yrs.People can spout all the shit about willie they want but willie wrote 2 of the most classic country songs ever, "crazy" and "hello walls". Past that some of willies lyrics stand up really well as poetry, should one take them out of the context of a song, for example most of the "red headed stranger" album. One of my favorite willie things ,isnt even on a willie record. Theres a Toots and The Maytals record called "true love" the track"stills still movin to me is just too fuckin good, between frank "toots" hibbarts rusty, crusty ol baratone voice, and that funky sings just behind the beat thing willie does, it just works so fuckin well.

and just for the fuck of sayin so ,one of willies best sellers was "pancho and lefty" w/merle haggard, great as it is willie didnt write it. Townes vanzant did, so even as far as what willie covers, hes got great taste.

Myself, I'm kinda partial to "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain", although "Blue Skies" is always a favorite, too.

I got a real charge out of the video he did singing "Gravedigger" by the Dave mathews Band. For those of you who haven't seen it. Do yourself a favor and UTube it asap. Willie is dressed all in black, standing at a grave with a shovel. The vid was really well done IMO.

And what about the blunt smoking incident on the White House roof? Only Willie can lay claim to this distinction. Wasn't this some of Jimmy Carters' relatives that took him up there to light up? Apparently the Prez didn't puff it but his family sure did. Me: Hey Willie, hows the view from the White House roof? Willie: Its High man, really high!
LOL

"Help Me Make It Through The Night" has got to be in my top 10 favorite Willie songs. I just listened to the original recording version and Willie's voice was so powerful in that song. Yes, powerful yet soothing and friendly at the same time. Sad that his voice is going now with his old age.

My first concert was Waylon and Willie at the Garden.  I went with my pops and we drove two and a half hours from the farm to the city and sat waaaay up in the blue seats with a bunch of drunk and stoned bikers.  When the Jack bottle came by the old man said "Go ahead and have a swig, boy."  I was ten.

Since then I've seen Willie more than a dozen more times, most recently a few months ago.  He still plays all the classics and jams for hours, also taking requests while dutifully tossing his signature bandana into the crowd, replacing it on his head and throwing it again every fifteen minutes or so.

What a lot of folk don't know about Willie is that he was told he would never make it in Nashville because he couldn't sing.  For many years he never played on the stage, but wrote some of the greatest country hits ever, including "Crazy, " the signature song of Patsy Cline.

Great man, great artist, great thread.

That was by Kris Kristofferson.. My dad used to sing that one and play it on his old hollow-body Gibson acoustic..

Didn't realize K.K. had written that one.
It's true what Seamus said about the classiness of Willies' covers. I just listened to him do "Heartbreak Hotel" on the Ipod. His version is my favorite cover of that tune.
