Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / I dream about straight
« on: June 29, 2004, 10:52:00 AM »
I still dream about straight.  It has been 25+ years since I was "enrolled", and I still have the dreams.  Not so bad anymore...it seems time takes care of a lot of it.  Earl on, maybe 15 or so years out, I'd have a dream 'bout straight; I would not have to be even physically in a straight situation, just the feeling of being in-side the walls of the program was the main reminder.  I was a very uncomfortable, captive feeling.   Often, I have the ability to eliminate all the people in the dreams that were from straight.   The elimination was vivid and intense to say the least.

Now, once a blue moon I dream of straight.  Never intense anymore; I just kinda move on to another subject.

Abuse here was worse

I read your articles on the systematic abuse of Iraq prisoners who are and have been in the "care" of our military. I think it is shameful how they have been treated. However, I really don't understand all of the international fuss over it. Straight, Inc., based in St. Petersburg, systematically abused thousands of children in its "care" over the course of 17 years. The abuse the children suffered at Straight was far worse than anything the Iraqi prison have experienced and no one was held accountable.

At least in the case of the Iraq prisoners those responsible for the systematic abuse will be held accountable. Why? Because they have the support of governments across the globe. And we saw that the U.S. government tried to hide it!

Straight, Inc., has the support of the U.S. government, and the victims of Straight have no recourse, no international outcry. I read one Iraqi prisoner's account of his abuse at the hands of the Americans. He said: I can no longer go home as I am too ashamed.

The victims of Straight can no longer go "home."

The Bush administration lies to go to war and misleads the American people into thinking they are getting a true tax break. Now Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan tells working Americans they need to give up part of their Social Security to finance the war, rebuild Iraq and provide a tax cut for the filthy rich.  I say, bullshit.

Is anybody paying attention?

Straight, Inc. and Derivatives / strange 1st phase experiences
« on: November 15, 2003, 08:38:00 PM »
I think the wierdest time during my incarcaration in St. Pete was probably the first three or so weeks.  Getting used to being in group for me was no easy thing.  The sitting in the bench and chair thing for 12+ hours/day was not easy for me.   I think living with my oldcomer was very strange.  I remember 'bout my 10th day he started taking baths and whacking off in tub (with the curtain drawn closed)  I remember him saying to me something like "...if you are lucky you too will love yourself enough to do this..."  I hated it when he did that.

Another thing that blew my mind was when this 2nd phaser got confronted for having his dog in the shower with him.  He ended up admitting to beastiality with the dog.  He of course  got started over.  God that was a fucked up introduction to straight.

Here is the letter I sent today to the St. Pete Times letter's tot he editor:  Flood 'em with letters y'all!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Editor:

Richard Bradbury is telling the truth!  I was a victim of Straight, Inc. for approximately 15 months from Dec 1978 to March of 1980.  During my time at Straight, Inc. I endured and witnessed countless horrors and abuses on children.  At Straight, basic human needs were regularly withheld from me, other children and young adults.  This includes the denial of  water, food, sleep and medication when I was sick.  We were allowed 2 dixie riddle cups of liquid per day. Later we were allowed a little more liquid, but never enough.  The only time I was able to hydrate myself was in the 2-3 minute shower I was allowed at night. I was beaten by children under the supervision and encouragement of adults and other children staff. When I had a fever of 102+, I was not allowed any medication to break the fever.    When I had jock itch that covered my body from my waist to my knees, I was not allowed any medication.  I soiled myself when I was sick, was told it was an attention game and was not allowed to change clothes or clean myself for almost 10 hours. I was imprisoned at Straight after I was 18 years of age without a court order.    I was restrained, sat on and gang tackled by groups of boys when I tried to leave after my 18th birthday.  I had to sleep on a terrazzo floor many days during the first phase of my program.

I personally witnessed countless other children being beaten, restrained, humiliated, denied medication, food, sleep and water.  I remember seeing an 11 year old boy hogtied, hung upside down and beat with a broom.  His crime?  He wanted to go home to his parents.

The abuses at Straight were covered up for many many years and it's time the world, and especially the people in the Tampa Bay area know what went on.  We are no longer children.  We are now adults which is something the people that ran straight never thought would happen.
