Help me understand brainwashing!

Can someone give me an idea on what brainwashing really is.  
I think I may have endured brainwashing early in my life.  When I was younger, my parents forced me to stop shiting my pants!  I didn't know any better, and now I am even teaching my children not to shit themselves.  Am I doing the wrong thing?  I have been think about turning this around.  I still wonder if I should pay my parents back by shiting on there car, home, or shoes.  I know that sound harsh, but I wasn't given any other choices at the time, and now, after reading these postings and reading all this free thinking, I am confused.  PLEASE HELP!
