Does anyone remember a movie about Straight that came on TV in the mid 80's? Seems like it was called, "Not My Child" and it was about a teenage girl in a program like Straight. I remember seeing it, seems like it was really watered down. I am curious if anyone knows how that movie got made in the first place.

God, they made us watch it.....
Nuff said...ditto...

I Couldn't believe they showed Midnight Express to us in 1981....the thought of a movie about getting caught with hash in Turkey, sentenced to a horrendous prison, and the unjustly imprisioned Billy and his incredible story of survival and escape. An Academy award winner about the same theme as my life at that moment. If the staff only knew how much stregnth that gave me as I fought in group and stared into space....

In Atlanta we were shown "Christianne F" about a gilr using heroin in Berlin in the 70's, they wouldn't let us see the Bowie concert that was in the film.

Does anyone know how to get a copy of the 60 Minutes report on the program that aired in 1984- we were all warned not to watch TV that night- we were told not to even turn on the TV.

Not my Kid did suck really bad, and it was really watered down.

They showed Midnite Express in the VA program in 1983, along with Scared Straight, of course. I slept thru them both. LOL

As for the 60 Minutes show, we contacted them and they don't have copies of anything more than 10 years old.

BTW, the movies they showed us were always chopped up, like the homosexual kissing scene in Midnight express, or trimming objectionable material of any kind.
It still kills me that to any intelligent misbehavior with brains online, the Midnight Express is a cheerleading movie to NEVER give up, and take your chances to escape.
Staff were so simple as to think it was a story about where drugs could get you...

Yeah I barely remember that movie "Not My Kid" only saw it once all the way through.
We got to watch "The Little Mermaid" (joy) and another movie, but I can't remember the name of it.
We only saw 3 movies, but I appreciated them since I was only on 1st phase most of my "program" and 2nd phase only about a month of my stay there.

Watching movies meant we didn't have to relate in group and be bitched out.. it was wonderful!

I remember us all going into the carpet room to see Midnight Express. It was incredible. We actually got to avoid ourselves by watching a movie. I agree with you Bill, it is a movie about endurance and how to overcome the odds. I kept getting in my head about the hash and how good it taste. Yummy Turkish hashish

"Not My Kid" showed a pro-straight anti-drug point of veiw.  Some day one will be made showing the true straight, from our veiwpoint.  It needs to be done.  It is such a pain in the ass tring to explain that place to people that wern't there.

What I remember about watching Midnight Express was the affect it was supposed to have on us.  We were supposed to watch the movie and be appreciative that we were in Straight and not in some Turkish prison.  Afterwards, someone always stood up to share their feelings about being in jail or another rehab, etc.   I called these ?cop out raps? because staff didn?t have to do anything.  All they had to do was ask, ?So how did that make you feel??  They call on some people, a few tears are shed, then they tell us how that could be us if we weren?t in the program and that was the end of rap.

Wasn?t there a scene where the girlfriend came to visit and presses her breast against the glass?  We didn?t see that scene!  It?s probably a good thing we didn?t because there would have been at least a dozen guys who would want to talk about themselves during lunch.  You know?they watched the movie, started having fantasies, did the deed and now they feel guilty.  Of course, contestant #1 stands up and gets ripped to shreds by the group then any guy that thought about wanting to talk quickly changed his mind and went back to eating his crap du jour.  The only other movie I can remember seeing was a Disney movie- The Apple Dumpling Gang.

On my program, we had two movies we could watch (without getting permission) on 1st and 2nd Phase: "Not My Kid" and "The Cross and the Switchblade" (with Pat Boone and Eric Estrada). I swear I saw them over and over just to watch something on TV. It was funny then, and I still smile when I think about those awful movies.
