Kim, I don't think this ever happened at Straight, but Elan once had contracts with some state child welfare agencies. From a couple of states away, it probably looked like a good bargain; whatever the fee they charged covered housing, food, education and whatever. The PR was probably worth more than the fees, but then indigent kids are damned easy marks, so I guess it ballances out. Any of the rich kids might go home, make up with their wealthy parents and sue the pants off of Joe Ricci or even press criminal charges. The state agency wouldn't do that; they'd more likely sweep it all under the rug as it would be a big embarassment to them.

At one point a state agency did act on complaints. I think it was Illinoise, but could have been some other. They sent inspectors out to look the place over and, almost immediately, took all of their charges out and quit sending any more. The cult responded, if memory serves, by rallying a couple of the CPS agencies they had more firmly in their pockets to speak for them.

Indigent interesting word guess if it makes you feel better to use it so be it. I was trying to make a point that all who went to elan were not rich kids as that seems to be the tone over here. Iam also not indigent just your everyday blue collar worker like my father before me many of people from elan have done very well and ya know what so have I. I do however resent your condesending attitude and really wish you all would know what it is your talking about before you spout... Theres another post on here that said its all relevent and I must agree the real world will kick your ass much more then elan ever could and ya know what ya deal with its life not fair but its just how it goes...
