Strange phone calls every night - you too?
« on: April 23, 2003, 12:19:00 PM »
Does anyone here get phone calls at home or work where the person or THING on the other line waits 1/2 a second after you say "hello", and then hangs up without saying a word?  Just curious. This has started happening only since I've been on the board. Obviously, I'm posting anonymously for a reason now.

That does happen to everyone. It's the latest trend in telemarketing technology. (well, not THE latest, but just lately broadly deployed)

They have a machine set up to do a dry run through their number list. It'll record whether the result of the call was diconnect, busy, no answer or answer and the day and date and determine from that data when would be the best time to call and get a live person.

Isn't technology wonderful? I mean, we no longer have to actually talk to some trustee from a state or federal prison to tell them it's none of your damned business when I expect to be home next.

While it is true that it's only telemarketers trying to reach you, those calls are not generated to hang up on you on purpose. There has been recent legislation enacted to help prevent those "abandoned calls". It happens when the automatic dialer at a call center connects more calls than it has agents to handle. Telemarketers don't hang up on you on purpose. I know because I train them.
