With regard to Nancy Lund, aka the "key steward of the Marlboro brand for more than two decades" according to her brief bio, see also the short thread Only @ Hyde, re. one of Hyde's (many) marketing endeavors. From an old press release on Hyde's website, emphasis added:
The website was conceptualized during discussions between Hyde Board of Governors member Nancy Lund and Hyde President Malcolm Gauld, who expressed interest in featuring the "unique" and "intriguing" qualities and experiences delivered only at Hyde. Over the past several months, Lund, teaming up with Leo Burnett Worldwide, Inc., a cutting edge global marketing firm, and a group of Hyde employees, an edgy crowd, captured what they believe is the essence of marketing concepts for the Hyde experience. The end result is the Only @ Hyde idea which, over time, will be incorporated into the organization's marketing materials and tools.

A coupla things to keep in mind, to help clarify the picture:
* Altria Client Services is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Altria Group, Inc. which, prior to 2003, was better known as Philip Morris, the manufacturer of Marlboro cigarettes (among other brands). They changed the name in an attempt to clean up their public image in the wake of all the lawsuits.
* Leo Burnett Worldwide has handled the Marlboro account since sometime in the 1950s.
* See also: Altria Means Tobacco: Philip Morris's Identity Crisis, by Elizabeth A. Smith, PhD and Ruth E. Malone, PhD, RN (Am J Public Health. 2003 April; 93(4): 553–556). Alternate link
Hyde School, despite Joe Gauld's alleged former view that "the Tobacco Institute brainwashes the public" (he's right about that), is most decidedly in bed with Big Tobacco! ...Who's zooming who here?

Not only did Elan let me smoke, they bought me cigarettes. It was frowned on for kids to smoke, even then, so it never made sense to me until I read the CIA brief on brainwashing, and how to use cigarettes in the process
Chris Rock said "If Philip Morris was a bunch of country niggers, they'd have been hung"
If these people are sitting on that great fortune, how do you stop them?
That's what I want to know.
No wonder Judy Meyer dropped the story
I'll do anything I can to help, but I have no plan for these people. Not one that will work

Back during my days at Hyde, smoking was not allowed. Another student has reported that it was allowed for Senior Leadership, to be done "discretely" (possibly 'cuz a good number of those kids were at least 19), but that was not something I was privy to at the time. Iirc, kids who were caught smoking were even put on work crew (now known as "2-4"), but I may have an incomplete memory of the circumstances (i.e., there may have been other contributory "offenses"). I have no idea as to how this rule is interpreted these days.
Do you have a link to "the CIA brief on brainwashing, and how to use cigarettes in the process?"

--- Quote --- MEMORANDUM FOR: The Honorable J. Edgar Hoover
Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation
SUBJECT : Brainwashing
The attached study on brainwashing was prepared by my
staff in response to the increasing acute interest in the
subject throughout the intelligence and security components
of the Government. I feel you will find it well worth your
personal attention. It represents the thinking of leading psy-
chologists, psychiatrists and intelligence specialists, based
in turn on interviews with many individuals who have had
personal experience with Communist brainwashing, and on
extensive research and testing. While individuals specialists
hold divergent views on various aspects of this most complex
subject, I believe the study reflects a synthesis of majority
expert opinion. I will, of course, appreciate any comments
on it that you or your staff may have.

--- Quote --- 1. Making the individual aware of control is the first stage in
changing his behaviour. A small child is made aware of the physical
and psychological control of his parents and quickly recognizes that
an overwhelming force must be reckoned with. So, a controlled adult
comes to recognize the overwhelming powers of the state and the im-
personal, "incarcerative" machinery in which he is enmeshed. The in
-dividual recognizes that definite limits have been put upon the ways
he can respond.

--- Quote ---2. Realization of his complete dependence upon the controll-
ing system is a major factor in the controlling of his behavior. The con-
trolled adult is forced to accept the fact that food, tobacco, praise,
and the only social contact that he will get come from the very in-
terrogator who exercises control over him.

Cigarettes are a powerful manipulation tool because they're very addictive
We were near adulthood, so they probably figured "Fuck it" My parents bought me cigarettes for Christmas
