Search continues Thursday AM for missing teen in Calhoun County

January 26, 2012 7:13 AM

Jeffrey Scott Mooney

SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Calhoun County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a missing teenager complaint around 7:30 Wednesday night.

They say 15-year-old Jeffrey Scott Mooney walked away from the Starr Commonwealth in the 13000 block of 26 Mile Rd. in Sheridan Township.

They say he left a note stating that he was leaving and would not be returning.

Mooney is described as a white male, 5'9" tall, 178 lbs., with blue eyes and short, light brown hair.

Deputies spent several hours searching the area for the missing teen after learning he has a medical condition and because of the cold temperatures. At one point the Michigan State Police brought in a helicopter with a heat sensor system, and tracking dogs both from the Springfield Department of Public Safety and Michigan State Police.

Throughout the investigation deputies found out that the teen had spent four months in an outdoor wilderness survival class in Utah, and did have warm, thermal clothing on when he left.

If anyone has seen or has any information on the whereabouts of Mooney, please contact the Calhoun County Sheriff's Office at (269) 781-0880.

ALBION — A 15-year-old Pennsylvania boy who walked away from Starr Commonwealth Wednesday night was found about 9:30 a.m. today and returned unhurt to the school.

Capt. Matt Saxton of the Calhoun County Sheriff Department said officers had a tip that the boy was seen northwest of Albion and called for a Michigan State Police helicopter to aid in the search.

Saxton said when the aircraft flew over a wooded area, the youth walked out.

He was reported missing from the school about 7:30 p.m. and left a note that he wouldn't be back and wouldn't be a burden anymore.

Jeffrey Scott Mooney, 15, has been found and returned to the Montcalm School at Starr Commonwealth.

Calhoun County Sheriff's deputies have found a teen who went missing Wednesday evening in Sheridan Township.

Around 9:30 a.m., Jeffrey Scott Mooney walked out of a wooded area near Bemer and Cooper streets on the edge of Albion, said Capt. Matt Saxton. Mooney had been missing since 7:30 p.m.

"He was cold but fine," Saxton said.

Jeffrey, 15, walked away from the Montcalm School at Starr Commonwealth, said Dana Jacob, director of corporate communications for the school. The Montcalm School, 13725 Starr Commonwealth Road, is a private boarding school for teenagers with emotional and mental conditions.

Jacob said Jeffrey had been returned to campus and is physically OK. School staff notified the sheriff's office immediately after discovering Jeffrey missing. Staff assisted deputies and officers in the search, Jacob said.

"We're very thankful to local law enforcement and thankful for returning him safely," Jacob said.

Jeffrey, who is from Pennsylvania, walked away from the school, leaving a note that said he would not be coming back. He left wearing warm, thermal clothing. Jeffrey had wilderness survival training, reports stated.

Sheriff's deputies searched the area with assistance from a Michigan State Police helicopter and tracking dogs from the state police and Springfield Department of Public Safety. They resumed searching this morning.

During the search, Albion Department of Public Works employees spotted someone matching Jeffrey's description near Bemer and Cooper streets, about 4 miles from Starr Commonwealth's campus, Saxton said.

Deputies and state police officers set up a perimeter around the area. The state police helicopter made one pass over the area, and Jeffrey walked out of the woods, Saxton said.

Saxton said Jeffrey has a history of running away.

A little confusion as to the note this kid left. . . This article states he left a note saying he WOULD be back. . . the previous article said he left one stating he would NOT be back. . .

No matter. . . I'm just glad he has been found & is okay.

I'm glad this young man was found safe. It's a story because there is always a chance that someone might read it and see the person involved. It's called human interest.

SHERIDAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Police found a Calhoun County teenager safe 14 hours after he left a note saying he was leaving and would not be returning.

Jeffrey Scott Mooney, 15, has a minor medical condition and police were concerned for his safety because of the cold weather.

Deputies were called around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Starr Commonwealth facility near Albion, where Jeffrey was staying.

Police began a search using a Michigan State Police helicopter with a heat censoring system, as well as tracking dogs. The search efforts on Wednesday night were called off due to darkness and the thickness of surrounding woods.

The search resumed Thursday morning and a Department of Public Works spotted him around 9:30 a.m., but Jeffrey ran back into some woods near Albion.

The state police helicopter was called back to the scene and authorities set up a perimeter. Jeffrey came out of the woods and taken back to Starr Commonwealth. He was cold but unharmed, police told 24 Hour News 8.

Jeffrey previously spent four months in an outdoor wilderness survival class in Utah, police said in a news release. He took warm, thermal clothing with him before disappearing on Wednesday.
