--- Quote from: "Wayne Kernochan" ---Was the Hyde School named after this guy? I don't know the history.

--- Quote from: "spacecadet" ---No. Hyde School was named after the property that the original campus was built on, the mansion and estate of John S. Hyde, and no relation I'm sure. The founder of Hyde School is Joe Gauld who bought the property in the '60s.
--- End quote ---
I more or less concur with spacecadet. That is, the Hyde School was named after the family that had originally developed that property. Back during their ownership, it was called "Elmhurst." What is currently referred to as "the mansion" was, once upon a time, the Hyde family's house.

The fountain of funds that enabled such a display of wealth resided primarily in the simple economics of war. The Hyde family founded Bath Iron Works, Inc. The bulk of ships produced by BIW were and perhaps still are destroyers under naval contract. At the height of production during World War II, they were churning one out every 17 days.

Whether or not Dr. Robert Hyde is related to this family is another story, one which I don't have an answer to, although I'd venture that if they *are* related it is probably distantly. A preliminary and admittedly cursory search was inconclusive, although it's interesting that the maiden name of Robert Hyde's mother was Wells. There is a Wells, Maine...

At any rate, the Hydes of Bath, Maine, were primarily a merchant family. The Hydes of Bakersfield, Vermont, had quite a few doctors and ministers, and not so many merchants, or so it seems.

Dr. Hyde will be greatly missed by his many friends in Bakersfield and surrounding towns for his devotion to duty and his kindly and friendly ministration in all cases of need. He was a wise man in the finest sense that word can convey. He was a man of sincere Christian faith, of sterling integrity, of wide interests, and with all kindly and friendly in all his dealing. He was wise in the ways of his profession keeping up with the advances in medical practice.

The speakers eulogized Dr. Hyde by quoting the closing lines from Edwin Markham's poem, "Lincoln, the Man of the People":

"And when he fell in whirlwind, he went down
As when a lordly cedar, green with boughs
Goes down with a great shout upon the hills
And leaves a lonesome place against the sky."

The passing of Dr. Hyde truly leaves a lonesome place against the sky of Bakersfield.
