CAN Res Schools - Confrontation a means of washing - 1940s
« on: October 10, 2011, 11:33:23 PM »
Somewhere in the 1940s, this was being described by the natives in the Residential Schools.

Quote
"They were always pitting us against each other, getting us to fight and molest one another.  It was well designed to split us up and brainwash us so that we would forget that we were the Keepers of the Land.  The Creator gave our people the job of protecting the land, the fish and the forests.  That was our purpose for being alive.  But the whites wanted it all and the residential schools were how they got it.

And it worked.  We've forgotten our sacred task, and now the whites have most of the land and have taken all the fish and the trees.  Most of us are in poverty, addictions, family violence.  And it all started in the schools, where we were brainwashed to hate our own culture and to hate ourselves so that we would lose everything." (Testimony of Harriet Nahanee to Kevin Arnett, North Vancouver, BC, 1998)

So we know it was going on in the 1900s-40s.

Also brings up another point: Synanon and its derivatives are not meant to specifically cure.  They are meant to convert those that are willing to convert and to kill off those that won't.

Fwiw, in the very early days, when Synanon was pretty much composed more or less of just hard core narcotics addicts, it did profess to "cure," or, at the least, to teach addicts to completely abstain.

Also, I don't think Synanon intended to "kill off" those that wouldn't convert (although Paul Morantz could quite understandably contest this). They actually, according to Yablonsky and others, turned quite a few people away, or kicked them out, if the required commitment just wasn't there or was insufficient in their eyes. They were always hard up on space. A bit of a non sequitur this, or maybe not, but... I s'pose weeding out the most likely statistical failures is one way to artificially plump up those alleged fantastic success rates.

Doing some reading in the histories of psychology, it was in the 1920s that psychologists were suggesting that you needed to confront the addict to break their defenses.  The supposition formed at a time when psychologists looked down upon as addicts as being immoral or flawed in terms of character as opposed to being ill.  The relationship from 1880s through to the 1920s between the Crown and the Natives in Canada definitely soured as white supremacy took hold.

Anyone follow the Magdalena Schools history?
