Founded by Vincent Marino in 1971, Habilitat is a long term residential substance abuse treatment center for adults 18 and over that are struggling with addictions to drugs and alcohol. Built on the Therapeutic Community Model, Habilitat has just celebrated its 40th anniversary and has grown from a small home with 8 residents to a sprawling residence that can accommodate 200 residents on an acre and a half at the base of the Ko'alau Mountains on the island of Oahu, on the coast of Käne'ohe Bay.

Vinny Marino, Habilitat's founder, grew up in New York's "Little Italy" as a teenage street punk on heroin. After battling his own addictions and street behaviors, Marino was committed to addressing and helping those with substance abuse addictions. Daniel Katada is the Executive Director at Habilitat, Jeff Nash holds the Program Director position and B. Blankenfeld is the Admissions Director. Habilitat is licensed by the State of Hawaii and recently received a Commendation from the Governor of Hawaii for the contributions to the health and wellness of the community.

Habilitat, also known as "The School of Survival" is a 27 month program, offering its residents a three part phase program that includes the treatment phase, re-entry phase and post-re-entry phase. Phase one is well monitored by staff and senior residents, phase two gets residents involved in their diverse vocational training programs that include food service, medical administration, admissions, facility management, plumbing and other technical and maintenance offerings just to name a few. Habilitat is operated by residents except for the clinical department. Each day on campus starts the same…morning meeting with all the residents, seminar (which includes speaker meetings, 12 steps work, pro and con debates in addition to recreational activities) and the encounter group, or rap session, with peers and staff, where residents openly discuss issues relating to day to day encounters, fears, insecurities and what changes the resident still needs to work on. Direction and guidance is given by the group and staff on what to work on and solutions to their problems.

Exercise is mandatory for residents and Habilitat has a fully equipped gym and aerobics studio. They also offer a wide variety of sports and activities including sailing, hiking, fishing and team sports such as volleyball and bicycling. Residents participate in all aspects of Habilitat's annual luau and benefit concert and their annual Christmas Tree Project for the community, with all proceeds going back into the maintenance and running of the facility.

Habilitat Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Geezz... gotta wonder 'bout some of these alleged claims. They sound just like claims made by pretty much every TC on the planet (at least the more high profile ones). Claims which, moreover, have been shown to be significantly inflated and/or contingent on patients becoming more or less life-long residents or clients of said TC...

Habilitat, Inc. celebrated its 40th Anniversary on January 27, 2011. Habilitat started from humble beginnings when it was created by Vinny Marino in 1971, in a two bedroom house in Kailua. Since its inception Habilitat has moved to a one-acre estate overlooking beautiful Kaneohe Bay, and has grown to become one of the most successful long term substance abuse programs in the nation. Forty years is a milestone for any organization, especially a self-supporting, non-profit, therapeutic community, such as Habilitat.

Habilitat accepts people from all walks of life. Since 1971 the organization has helped over ten thousand individuals. Habilitat is unique among substance abuse programs in that it does not subscribe to the conventional theories of addiction. Instead of focusing on the idea that addiction is a disease, residents are taught that substance abuse is a choice, and are given a unique and highly effective method of treatment. Habilitat emphasizes on behavioral modification rather than simply treating the "addiction". In addition to the behavioral modification, residents receive education and vocational training in one of several departments.

While Vinny was the Executive Director he appeared on many nationally syndicated television programs such as: The Larry King Show, The Sally Jesse Raphael Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show as well as many other national television and radio news shows. In addition to television and radio, Vinny published three books; "Vinny", "Vinny Part Two" and "Journey From Hell". He received accolades and commendations both personally and professionally from nearly every elected official in Hawaii. He was invited to speak at numerous conferences on substance abuse and was a member of various committees on the subject of drugs and drug abuse. Many of the "recognized authorities" in the field of rehabilitation, including Julio Martinez (Commissioner of Substance Abuse in New York) conferred the highest possible honors upon Habilitat and rated it in the top of the nation among substance abuse programs. After Vinny's death in 2000, his wife Vickie took the helm and continued Habilitat's legacy of helping people, until she too passed away on Thanksgiving Day 2002. Today the traditions started by Vinny and Vickie are carried on by Executive Director Daniel Katada and Facility Director Jeffrey Nash. In recent years Habilitat has enjoyed resounding success in the field of rehabilitation, continuing to boast success rates nearly three times the national average at the five year mark after graduation. The fundraising endeavors have seen their share of success as well. Among other things, Habilitat has grown to become one of the leading Christmas tree distributors in Hawaii, with all proceeds going directly back into the program.

Habilitat is a one-of-a-kind organization that has helped to change many lives around and reconnect families.

Quote from: "Woodbury Reports press release"

So... Vinny Marino apparently spent some time in Synanon. And that Federal Rehab Hospital/Prison in Lexington, Kentucky (Narco Farm). And Daytop. And Phoenix House. As well as a sundry assortment of more mainstream rehabilitation establishments.

Recently one of the most successful long-term, residential substance abuse programs in the United States, Habilitat, has started admitting residents under the age of 18 to receive their unique brand of treatment. Boasting success rates nearly 3 times the national average, Habilitat is now opening its doors to individuals between the age of 15 and 18 for the first time since 2002.

Habilitat has been dedicated to helping rebuild lives and reconnect families for over 40 years, and will continue to do so, on a broader scale by taking in youths who have the desire to change and the willingness to do whatever it takes.
