Allright Cady, I'll take a stab at this one, lol. You're not the first to consider some significance concerning that final scene. I recall reading that there was some kind of message implied like "as hard the black man tries, he'll still get fucked in the end by the white man" or something to that effect. The guy who made the movie, George Romero said in response to that statement that he "just wanted to make a good horror movie." That guy (the black guy) was the most competent character throughout the whole film in dealing with the calamity that was taking place. It sucked to see him get shot in the end.
