Saving Teens® In Crisis Collaborative (STICC) is very pleased to announce that we are expanding in order to serve even more families. STICC has recently merged with the Alldredge Family Foundation (AFF), a charitable organization also dedicated to supporting struggling teens and their families. AFF and its program have now merged with and will operate under the name of Saving Teens® In Crisis Collaborative (STICC).

To families and our friends in the therapeutic and educational communities, we are now one, and can now offer an expanded level of services to families in need. STICC will continue to offer funding to teens from the point of crisis all the way through graduation and after care, but will additionally be able to assist families whose teens have already graduated from a program, so that they can make a successful transition home and stay on the path toward a healthy adulthood.

Saving Teens® In Crisis Collaborative (STICC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that assists troubled teens and their families struggling with substance abuse and other emotional issues.

STICC is currently in the process of raising funds for our next family. We are grateful for your financial support through the donations page on our website:www.savingteens.org

What is the Alldredge Family Foundation?
« Reply #1 on: December 23, 2009, 10:41:00 AM »
Alldredge Family Foundation appears to be a "support" organization comprised of program parents and satisfied alumni of Alldredge Academy. That is, program proponents perpetuating the program.

Here's a press release from a few years ago, when Alldredge Academy was bought up by Solacium, which also mentions in passing some of what Alldredge Family Foundation is all about; color emphasis mine:

Alldredge To Join Solacium Group

Dear Friends of Alldredge Academy:

We have several important announcements to make.  As Alldredge completes almost a decade of service to youth and families, we thank you for helping make our successes possible.  We have evolved into the most complete, effective and sophisticated short-term program for adolescents in the United States.  Our combination of mountain search and rescue, "rite of passage" village, and academic boarding school has created a therapeutic milieu that generates outcomes in 3 months that other programs hope for in a year.  We want to keep you updated on our evolution.

  • Alldredge has successfully graduated over 1,000 students from the 3-month Semester Back program.
  • Alldredge has over 150 high school graduates receiving their diplomas from Alldredge.
  • Of the 12 nationally certified search and rescue experts in the state of West Virginia, five work for Alldredge.
  • We have helped write legislative drafts of rules and regulations for the state of West Virginia to manage short-term therapeutic programs, and these drafts have essentially been implemented and passed into law by the legislature.
  • Alumni of Alldredge have independently formed a nonprofit corporation, Alldredge Family Foundation, http://www.alldredgefamilyfoundation.org, to serve the families of Alldredge graduates as well as families seeking placement of their children in need or crisis.

Additionally, Alldredge has from its beginning searched for ways to expand the usefulness of its unique relational model beyond the borders of Alldredge; we have found a most excellent path.  Alldredge will become a member of the Solacium group, which was recently formed to raise the bar of service and safety within the adolescent care profession.  Alldredge has been owned by the Mitchell family who will continue to own an interest in Alldredge through their equity interest in Solacium.  Val Christensen, an equity partner in Solacium, has extensive experience in the health care industry and will be the CEO while L. Jay Mitchell, founder of Alldredge and co-founder of the SUWS Adolescent Program, will be responsible for program development and implementation.

CIC Partners LP, a Dallas entity with equity ownership in Solacium, will provide additional leadership and financial strength.  Solacium will develop new programs and seek out other programs who share common values and a desire for higher levels of excellence.  In this manner, we hope to raise the bar for the profession.  Another noted program that is part of the Solacium group is New Haven, a residential treatment center for girls.  Agreements between the parties should be completed within a few short weeks.

Alldredge will continue its operation with essentially the same program and personnel with one exception.  Angie Senic, who has been the CEO/Director at Alldredge, has made the difficult decision to leave the Alldredge family.  She is planning to stay in the industry, and is currently considering a position with another company.  Alldredge will miss her, and we thank her for the progress and growth we enjoyed under her stewardship.

Jim Browning will be our new CEO/Director.  He has been the Assistant Executive Director, for the Alldredge Academy, and has served as Director of the Mountain Search and Rescue Program, and Director of the "Rite of Passage" Village.  He has over 20 years of wilderness therapy experience, and has been with us for over 7 years.  Jim knows the program, the program model and the staff thoroughly.  We are excited that he has taken this position and look forward to his leadership in moving Alldredge forward.  He is known for his work with students, compassion, attention to detail, follow through, competency and intelligence.  We invite you to meet him personally if you have not done so already.

We are proud of our past and excited about our future.  We again express our appreciation for your support and trust.  We are working hard at Alldredge to be a significant difference maker.  We are fortunate to associate and collaborate with Solacium.  Please contact us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

L Jay Mitchell

A very brief and woefully incomplete summary of events/developments pertinent to Alldredge Academy and L. Jay Mitchell, as much for my benefit as anyone else's:

Alldredge Academy, one of the more notorious programs on this forum, was founded by one L. Jay Mitchell, a long-time industry diehard. Mitchell was also a founder or co-founder of SUWS, Greenbrier Academy, and the just recently opened Spokane Mountain. He is considered to be, or considers himself to be, "one of the pioneers in the concepts and methods" of what is called "wilderness therapy."

Over the course of its existence, Alldredge Academy (aka Ayne Institute) tried changing its name a number of times in an attempt to survive bad publicity, in part brought about by the 2001 hanging death of 14-year old Ryan Lewis (suicide). It was eventually merged into the fold of Solacium's roster of programs in 2006; L. Jay Mitchell becoming an exec thereof for a short time. Fwiw, that company was even known as Solacium Alldredge LLC in West Virginia for a time, at least according to one of their lobbyists (who, incidentally, also then happened to be a lobbyist for CRC Health Corporation).

When Solacium downsized and changed its name to InnerChange in November of 2008, some folk went elsewhere, among them L. Jay Mitchell and his program Greenbrier Academy. He left what was then known as Alldredge Wilderness Journey behind. In December of 2008, with "the economic realities hav[ing] reached a point where Alldredge Wilderness Program cannot continue to operate," InnerChange finally closed it for good.

Apparently, the former president of Alldredge Family Foundation is the father of a son who was in Ryan Lewis's wilderness group at the time of the latter's suicide. That incident seems not to have shaken this father's love of the program.

Excerpt below from Solacium's 12-page rebuttal of the 2007 GAO report* (which had cited the Ryan Lewis case), referring here to the Alldredge Family Foundation:

* "Residential Treatment Programs: Concerns Regarding Abuse and Death in Certain Programs for Troubled Youth" (GAO-08-146T; 10 October, 2007) PDF (38pp)

-------------- • -------------- • -------------- • --------------

  • The report fails to mention that the facility has not received a claim of any kind since this February, 2001 incident, and that an estimated 30% of the over 1,000 enrollments since 2001 have come from loyal alumni. (28) In fact, alumni have created with their own initiative and funding a 501(c)(3) Alumni Foundation in support of the Alldredge programs. (29) Also of note is the fact that the president of that association is father of a son who was in Ryan's wilderness group at the time of this tragic incident. This alumni association has reached out to the deceased boy's parents on several occasions but has had no response. (30)
  • The report also fails to indicate that the parents of the students in this group (after notification of the incident) elected to keep their children at the facility, and that those students successfully graduated. (31) Nor does it mention that the West Virginia DHHR sent representatives to the facility on the day after the incident and found that the remaining students were not at risk.

My guess is that father is none other than Rich McKinless, though I could be wrong...

SAVING TEENS® In Crisis Collaborative (STICC) is very pleased to announce that we are now offering Aftercare Scholarships to qualifying families of at-risk adolescents. Scholarship recipients will have successfully completed a term of residence at a therapeutic boarding school or wilderness program, and have or will soon be returning to a family setting and public or private school program. Aftercare support has been shown to assist in a successful transition home while staying on the path to a healthy adulthood.

These aftercare scholarships represent a continuation of the support previously offered by the Alldredge Family Foundation, now merged with STICC. More than 60 families have benefited from the program since its inception.

"We are pleased to launch this expanded service in support of families with struggling adolescents. Financial aid to families with such needs can make a significant and positive difference", said STICC Founder and President, John Reuben.

Full information is available at http://www.savingteens.org. Please click the Aftercare Scholarships Link to read about this program and for access to the online application.
