17 Boys Removed From Heritage Boys Academy

UPDATE

Late Friday, authorities announced three arrests connected to the investigation late Friday Afternoon.   Arrested were Clayton C. Maynard, 58, founder of the Home, and Robert Unger, 40, assistant directory.  Both were charged with one count of aggravated child abuse and five counts of child abuse, according to a BCSO news release.

A third man, 22-year-old Marcus Kurbatoff, whos position was not know, was arrested and charged with resisting an officer as authorities were arresting Maynard and Unger, according to the release.

20-year-old Russell Maynard, faces the same charges but had not been arrested as of late Friday, the release said.

A  joint child abuse investigation by the Bay County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department Of Children and Families at the Heritage Boys Academy, 4015 Maynard Avenue, Pnama City, FL, has resulted today in the emergency sheltering of all 17 juvenile residents housed at the facility.

On June 2, the Bay Copunty Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families initiated a joint investigation of the Heritage Boys Academy, which is a private residentil program for troubled youth.  The investigation was initiated as a result of an incidnet that occurred on June 2 in which a juvenile left the facility and was subsequently bettered by fellow students that were sent to find him.  The battery resulted in the juvenile suffering a broden nose.  The investigation also included a review of previous complaints received by the BCSO and DCF, which were investigated and unfounded due to a lack of evidence.

On June 4, Investigators with the Bay County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division and the Department of Children and Families responded to the Heritage Boys Academy.  S search of the facility and interviews of staff and 18 sutdents at the facility was conducted.  Evidence was developed through this process indicating that physical child abuse was occurring at the facility.

The Department of Children and Families sheltered 17 juveniles as a result of the evidence developed.  Detailed interviews and the collection of physical evidence is ongoing in this case.  The juveniles, who had been sent to the facility by their parents from as far away as Californial, are being placed in contact with their parents.

The State Attorney's Office and the Gulf Coast Children's Advocacy Center are assisting in this investigation.
