RiverView Academy: Mickey Manning & Lorne Riddell

<< < (2/5) > >>

BuzzKill:
I remember now - I recall seeing her on the Whoes Watching the Kids Documentary.
So, SCL is back up and running. Running from their past into an identical future.

Oscar:
It is not Spring Creek Academy reopened. I guess that once SCA closed, a lot of people was out of job. What could they do other than doing the only thing they knew? Locking Kids up?

So former employees of SCA seems to have opened a number of small group homes in the area. Beside RiverView Academy we found Star Peak Crossing. The therapist is a local therapist the parents pay directly and she works for a number of these group homes.

So the seminars etc. are gone. Now it is just a teenage prison and a local therapist if the parents wants to hire her. If they dont, it is just doing time.

We are looking at the sub-contractors. There are summer programs in the area, which are hired as punishment for teenagers in the programs instead of timeout rooms.

BuzzKill:
It would be a mistake to assume the seminars are not part of this - or that it isn't in many other ways typically WWASP.  They may not be using the old campus (yet) but I'd bettcha they are running this program much as any WWASP program. If they are set up in "family" homes, you have to suspect they are throwing in a dash of Straight Inc as well. Maybe Sembler and Litchfield meet over drinks at one of the Republican get togethers and worked up a new game plan.  If you can learn who is backing this; who owns the property; who is handling the marketing and so on, I feel confident you'd find many familiar names.

Anne Bonney:
I was thinking the same thing. Straight was able to get away with calling itself 'outpatient' because we slept at 'host homes'. Didn't matter than were locked in a warehouse for 12 - 20 hours a day.

Mickey Manning was one of the co-founders of Star Peak. I guess she has since "moved on," as she is no longer noted as such on Star Peak's website.

Incidentally, Mike Chism, Star Peak's other co-founder, is also a former administrator from Spring Creek Lodge.

The gender is incorrectly indicated in this 'New Perspectives' piece from StrugglingTeens below, but it's the same Mickey Manning alright:

STAR PEAK CROSSING

Thompson Falls, MT
Michael Chism, Director
406-827-7477
http://www.starpeakcrossing.com

Star Peak Crossing originally started in 2006 as a summer adventure program, expanding in 2008 to include a therapeutic residential program. This "alternative boarding school" is for teens, ages 14 to 18 years old, who struggle with negative behaviors such as: skipping school or dropping out of school, disrespect and anger, physical or verbal abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, low self esteem, social isolation or who may be disconnecting from their families.

Directors at Star Peak include Mickey Manning, who has a BA in psychology and an A in educational administration. He holds Montana and California teaching credentials (UCSB), in addition to Montana and California administration credentials (CSUN) and has 30 years experience in education as both a teacher and administrator. Michael Chism, also a Director, has 12 years experience running private programs for at risk youth, including 11 years as an administrator. Diane Morrin serves as the therapist. She has her BA in Sociology and an MA in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology. Star Peak has currently applied to NATSAP for membership.

The program at Star Peak Crossing includes a structured environment where students earn privileges and trust based on the choices they make. As trust is earned, students move up levels in the program and gain responsibility and leadership. Students are safely and structurally immersed into the local community, with students earning the privilege to attend the local high school and attend local 12 step meetings or shopping at the local stores. In addition, students participate in community service, volunteering for the local Chamber of Commerce with such events as the Huckleberry festival, local fishing derby or cleaning up the local highways. Students receive individual, group and family therapy.

Recreational activities include skiing, bowling, going to the movies or attending community sporting events. Located in the Cabinet Mountains of Montana, students also hike and explore the nearby Thompson River.
