:troubled teen" Myspace Ads
« on: March 10, 2010, 07:05:34 PM »
Does anyone know about who is behind the scene of advertising "troubled teen" all over myspace?
I think Myspace.com should eliminate them from advertising programs that are within the whole industry.

Has anyone else discussed this matter? Can anything be done? It would be like advertising for the Jihad... these programs are in their own way of being like terrorism towards teens.

And for those of us who did in fact survive, or have PTSD from the abuse in those teen mills, it is hard not to get triggered to flashbacks and anxiety just seeing the advertisements. I know with me personally, it is without a doubt triggering my PTSD. Now it is like no matter where you go, there they are...  :soapbox:

I know it's a free country. I just think it totally inappropriate to allow this advertising. It can be detrimental for survivors of the industry; being a constant reminder.. It just frustrates me a lot.

I imagine you are targeted for the add by the content of your myspace page. I'm sure it is an automatic thing. I get the same kind of adds. I know the knee-jerk reaction is to feel offended but consider the fact having that add pop up costs them, and if you click on it, it cost them. You can call and chat up the recruiters if you feel up to it - and that also cost them. And as you say they have chosen what seems unlikely to be a productive source of victims with myspace - maybe this will help you feel less angry about it.

I think lodging a complaint with MySpace (some kind of "report abuse" link) can't hurt and might help. I would point to the GAO study documenting widespread abuse, maltreatment, neglect and death in programs as the reason they should be blocked as advertisers.

Sorry to hear about the flashbacks...must be very unnerving to have those things hit you, especially at unexpected times.

The only way we're going to get Myspace and other publishers to X that advertising is to make it unprofitable. Best way to do that is to let the publishers know about the investigations and bad PR so that they understand the risks to their image in affiliating with them. This is not going to happen over night.
