Idiom Definitions for 'Forest for the trees'

If someone can't see the forest for the trees, they get so caught up in small details that they fail to understand the bigger picture.

When I first got out of the program I was in I was angry. I'm not like these strange people claiming they were somehow 'brainwashed' into loving the program while I was there, and honestly I don't see how that is possible. I have my suspicious though as to why people claim this, but that is another topic altogether. My point is, the anger subsides and eventually I saw the big picture and realized I was in the small minority. If we let our ego get in the way, we can project our own minority experience onto everyone else, even if they claim otherwise we can convince ourselves they are, too, 'brainwashed'.
