Mother's Act
« on: May 12, 2009, 11:53:17 PM »
It is not the governments role to screen “the people” for any kind of illness, particularly “mental” illness. Please say NO to the Mother’s Act- another way to take kids from their parents, unless they follow government dictates. You may not have time to make calls, but it just takes a minute to sign the petition and pass it on. Even if you're beyond child-bearing years, your kids aren't.

Groups Staunchly Oppose 'The Mother's Act' Saying it Strips Freedom and Rights

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Groups advocating to help maintain the basic freedoms of American mothers are speaking out loudly against legislation known as "The Mother's Act".

This is described as a sweeping government policy for all new births in the United States that would test and screen the mental conditions of new moms.
If they fail the questionnaire, the government could demand that they use dangerous anti-depressant drugs before their babies will be released into their custody.
The act has passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate.
The Mother's Act would mandate that all new mothers be screened by means of a list of subjective questions that will determine if each mother is mentally fit to take their newborn home from the hospital.
Freedom Fighter Radio said, "Just imagine that after your child is born, you are told that you can't take them home since a multiple choice questionnaire wasn't answered correctly."
"Just imagine being told that the only way you can take your child home is if you or your spouse goes into treatment or on anti-depressants which we know causes psychosis, delusions, and even homicidal thoughts."
Numerous groups have joined together in saying that it just doesn't make sense. This bill is on a fast track and there has been no public debate, and no public disclosure of the broad potential impact on society.

The Mother's Act appears to violate Constitutional right to privacy and a family's right to liberty. Groups fighting the act say it is just outright dangerous.
Groups are asking Americans to speak up and demand that politicians stop this.
The following list contains contact information for senators on the HELP Committee. Those opposing the act hope citizens will contact politicians and tell them that they want the Mother's Act to die in committee.

This is like that obligatory mental health screening for teens that they were/are trying to enforce through the school system. Except in that case, you could at least hope for sane parents opting out or fighting the system.

Here, who could opt out? Mothers would have to forego hospital births entirely, in order to avoid this. Which would be highly unwise in some circumstances.
