--- Quote from: "lena" ---I was a student at cascade from mid 86 to 1990. Don't ask, I was held back innumerable times, and as the only insurance case I know of at the time I was there, I now think there were alterior motives obviously. When I got there there were students named Grant Price, and Justin Merritt at cascade. I can't remember the others I recognized on their website. These were definitely cascade students. Anyone else know any info on them?

--- Quote from: "lena" ---oh sorry grant price and justin merritt was in reference to carlbrook.

Sorry, I'm confused... Are you saying that Grant Price and Justin Merritt (who were both part of the founding lineup at Carlbrook in 2001*) were both students at Cascade School when you were there during 1986-1990?
* Founders & Board of Regents, Carlbrook School (2001):
Glenn F. Bender, Ph.D., Dean of Academics
Justin J. Merritt J. D., Dean of Faculty and Administration
Jonathan Gurney, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Dean of Advising
Timothy B. Brace, M.A., Dean of Students
R. Grant Price, M.A., Dean of Admissions
Jason L. Merritt, M.D., Consulting Physician
--- End quote ---
Im pretty sure they were staff. I recall several people saying, right when the carlbrook issue came to light on this forum, that it was started by both ex-cedu and ex-cascade staff.

Mmmmm... Nah, I gonna tentatively go with students.
1.) According to perusal of various "find people" type sites, Justin J. Merritt was born in January of 1969, and R. Grant Price was born in September of the same year. While birth dates from this source have been known to be wrong by a year or two on occasion, even if so, it'd still put them at a kinda young age to be staff (although I could be wrong).
Assuming that the dates are correct (for the time being), if Lena did in fact arrive at Cascade in mid 1986, Merritt would have been 17 and a half, and Price would have been about 16 and three-quarters years old. It is entirely believable that when Lena got there, "there were students named Grant Price, and Justin Merritt at cascade. I can't remember the others I recognized on their website. These were definitely cascade students."
2.) According to a Carlbrook School Visit Report by Loi Eberle published on Struggling Teens Oct 27, 2003 (visit took place on June 24, 2003), both Kelly Dunbar, Assistant Dean of Admissions, and Grant Price commented on the fact that Carlbrook administration has both a former director and a former student perspective (bold emphasis mine):
Since Carlbrook is a relatively new school, I asked about its origins. Kelly named the founders and deans of this school: Timothy B. Brace, M.A., Dean of Students, Glenn F. Bender, Ph.D., Dean of Academics, Justin J. Merritt J. D., Dean of Faculty; John Henson, M.B.A., Dean of Administration, Jonathan Gurney, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Dean of Advising, Jason L. Merritt, M.D., Consulting Physician and Grant Price, M.A. Dean of Admission. Three of these seven had directed emotional growth programs, and four had been successful graduates from various ones. They had collectively dreamed about creating this school for quite awhile, and eventually solidified their plans and located this property, with its elegant buildings and large grounds, which seems a perfect location.
When Grant joined us on the porch he talked about what it was like to run the school with this team of directors. Grant laughed about the length of some of their meetings, which sometimes were heated discussions between those who had been former directors and those who were the graduates of previous schools. They would closely examine the vision of emotional growth education in theory, and then would hear feedback about what parts of it had actually been effective in practice.
3.) From Classmates.com (couldn't find an entry for Justin Merritt):
Grant Price
Cascade High School
Whitmore, CA
Class of 1988
4.) Some excerpts from a blog entry by someone who went to Cascade 1988-1992 (age 12-16?). The entry describes going to a book signing for Gone to the Crazies: A Memoir by Alison Weaver (who went to Cascade and wasn't too positive about it), and consequently meeting up with a few other Cascadians, one of whom attended Cascade from 1986-1988.
From The Book Signing. (Sunday, July 29th, 2007) (bold emphasis mine):
...Then again, as I flipped through the pages, there were other people I haven't thought about since I was 14 years old. I wondered what happened to them? Marc had some of the answers. Some people died, drug over doses, or medical conditions. Some were married to each other and had children. Some went on to do great things with their lives. A few of the other students have formed a new school, located in Virginia based on some of the Cascade concepts. We Googled random students names, to find some alarming articles about other Cascade Graduates and some Cascadians have simply dropped off the face of the earth.
I cried, I laughed. I remembered some people with fondness and others with crossness for ripping into me during forums. I saw photos of the students coming out of the 'Summit Workshop' dressed in all white. I saw the 'Dishes Committee' and was vividly reminded of the people who used to put me on Grill every single night. I saw the names of the 'Families' the school was divided into. I had completely forgotten the 'Family' names. I read quotes in yearbook that were used as 'tools' in workshops and celebrations along the way at Cascade. I was reminded of the acceptable music that pumped through the main house on campus. It was a wild journey down memory lane. We took funny pictures and reminisced until 2 am...
<... snip snip ...>
I arrived safely home and tucked into my bed by 330am. But I couldn't sleep. There was still too much going on in my head. Even days later there still is. I am interested in finding out more about the Carlbrook school, located in VA, because I am very curious, since three former Cascade students are on the faculty: John Henson, Justin Merrit, and Grant Price. I am interested in finding other Cascadians. I am dying to do some real research on the evolution of the school, and obtain a detailed version, fact based, about the exact nature of what led to the downfall of Cascade...
5.) According to one of the comments to the above blog post, Glenn Bender and Kelly Dunbar were also from Cascade:
Re: the school in Virginia, there are a number of people associated with Cascade who are now on faculty there, including Glenn Bender and Kelly Dunbar.
Ursus:
Summary of the previous two posts, in case ya can't bear to read through all of it:
Re. current Carlbrook School staff/administrators who were previously at Cascade School:
* Justin J. Merritt and R. Grant Price are former Cascade students
* Other former Cascadians who have ended up at Carlbrook, previous staff vs. student status unknown or uncertain:
John Henson (most probably former student)
Kelly Dunbar (probably former student)
Glenn Bender[/li]
[/li]
