This guy had developed a theory of de-patterning and re-patterning. It was used in MKULTRA where subjects were given LSD, the electro-convulsive theory, radiation, etc. I don't think they were doing this stuff at Synanon, CEDU or the others but the concept of patterning was very similar to their notions of the person needed to clear away all the past thoughts and emotions so they could reach some "better self".
This one is kind of a long watch but they mention this patterning stuff at about 24:00 through and the end explores some application on the public toward the end.
