I learned how to speak Californian in Idaho.
« on: November 10, 2008, 02:12:57 AM »
I think I can safely say that the all students at RMA were expatriates of another region of the country. But for some reason, the Idaho campus had a huge percentage of Californians. This is most likely owing to the fact that the parent campus is in California. (Although we still beat their ass every year in the east vs. west games, and several people in my peer group were instrumental in ensuring that always happened).

As restricted as we were regarding dress, the California look still managed to seep its way into the school's culture. Remember what kind of shoes girls were issued when they first got there? Those awful reebok high tops that permeated every California girlie teenage movie around in the 80s. What did the guys get? Vans? VANS??? ARE YOU FUCKING SHITTING ME?? MOTHERFUCKING VANS?? You dudes were sooo lucky!!

I remember seeing that among the required garb of flannels and cardboard jeans, we could get away with a shirt saying something like sideout or quicksilver on it during the summer months. Even if a kid's "image" was that you were a surfer boy.

And let's not forget patagonia. Oh lord, that's what I wanted for christmas more than anything. patagonia polar fleece, to warm my freezing ass.

What did us east coasters contribute to the allowable RMA wear? Motherfucking sebagos. Hey, let's live out in the middle of nowhere where snow is on the ground at least half of the year, and wear shoes with no traction!! Yaaay! Skiiing!!

Oh, and LL Bean and J Crew. Lovely.

I was wondering earlier tonight why I was talking Californian before I had even moved out to this state. My vocabulary was already littered with "likes" and "dudes" before I even descended onto the city by the bay. And then I realized.. motherfuck, I learned it in Idaho.

Like, ROFL!

I think Sorels might have been much better: http://www.sorel.com/Subcategory.aspx?top=2
I love those. Oh how I love them. Sebagos not in a million years, especially in snow. That sounds like a good way to get frostbite.

Bullshit, re: vans. That's what guys were issued when they got here. It voyageurs standard wardrobe. I remembered that I had never seen vans before RMA and was wondering what kind of shoes they were.

East vs. west was the annual football game between easties and westies. I can't remember if it was full-contact or touch. All I remember was that it was often very muddy, and done around thanksgiving time.

East v West  - Okay, I remember that as the Turkey Bowl. Now it may have been divied up as E v W but I didn't give a fuck. I was too psyched to engage in normal activity to care what the teams were. I do remember my first game in voyageurs. I was still in that, "where the fuck I am", "all these people are stranger than strange" phase. I remember another voyageur pulling some dirty moves and wanting to beat his ass. Always hated that guy's arrogance and vapidity.

If you're going to call bullshit on me you're going to have to step up to the plate with details:

- color
- low or high top
- slip on or lace
- solid colors, checkerboard patterns, combi colors &  with or without the van stripe

I remember getting there and only Summit/NH had the low key van models.

What the fuck...do I have to do all the work around here?

there were only one type of vans that were issued, and those were the hi-top sk-8s.

multi-colored, with stripe, but no prints, words or images.

Sorry charlie - Those are street issue stoner vans.

The only Vans I remember from the ranch were the low cutones... all blue, laces,  no stripe. I remember an older student, Scott who rocked a pair. Scot Underhill.

Well, you did get there later. I remember several guys in my peer group who rocked those things in voyagers. and the school gave it to them. Since several of them didnt even make it past quest, I can safely say that they didnt "earn" the right to wear them in challenge. All the guys essentially had a choice between basketball hi-top type sneakers (forget the brand. I think converse... but not chucks. The leathery kind of hi-top.), or vans.

The commisary had zero ability to provision bonafide threads..

If vans got in it was because the intake maestro approved them.

A store in 1986 Bonners Ferry did not sell vans.

That would be like buying a klan outfit at the NAACP.

Look, I can't help it if you're delusional. RMA was the first place I had ever even *seen* vans, and it was right when I got there, so I know my memory is clear on this.

OK TAC -

There was a vans factory and good vibrations in downtown BF...since 1933

I had an account at both establishments. I paid in sourballs, gummy worms and occasionally with yogurt covered pretzels.

As far as I know when you were brought into commisarry you were issued basic white mid converse shoes.  The older students were the only ones with Vans or OSIRISIS (Osirisis are RAW shoes if you wanna check them out).  It was the same with clothing you had to be in the higheest peer group to wear any non issued clothing.  This was at NWA in 200-2002
