New Partnership Offers Unique Help to Troubled Teens and Families

Turnabout/Stillwater Academy and Homeward Bound Unite to Provide Greater Aftercare Services

Salt Lake City, Utah, May 8, 2008 – Research shows lasting success among teens graduating from a residential treatment program is largely based on three components: family involvement during treatment, the return to a stable home environment, and the availability of aftercare support for youth and their families. For more than twenty years, Turnabout/Stillwater Academy has been incorporating these fundamentals into its treatment program, and now in partnership with aftercare leader Homeward Bound, Turnabout will offer troubled teens and their families more comprehensive aftercare services aimed at achieving greater long-term success.

"Through our combined efforts, Turnabout's graduating students and families will be more prepared for the real-world and will have higher levels of success than ever before," said Dr. Tim Thayne, founder and CEO of Homeward Bound. "While Turnabout has always been conscientious about how they help parents, this integrated program shows their full commitment to the process of aftercare."

As part of the new aftercare services, every family who comes to Turnabout will be given a Turnabout therapist and a Homeward Bound transition specialist, who work together to prepare teens and their families for the return home. The transition specialist educates parents on the transition process, assists them in making a transition plan, and provides them with vital support after their teen's graduation. Families will also have access to the Family Bridge, Homeward Bound's internet based program used for coordination and communication between the family, the family support team, their Turnabout therapist, and their transition specialist.

"Turnabout has always approached treatment with this end in mind—we want families to be successful after the program," said Scott Jones, program director at Turnabout. "Homeward Bound gives us more tools and experts to do just that, and I believe other treatment programs and professionals will look to our joint model as an example of what is possible in the field."

For more information on Turnabout and its partnership with Homeward Bound, contact Turnabout's program director Scott Jones.

Housing

Turnabout's family-based housing program helps extend your teen's support network and speeds up the behavior modification process.

A Unique and Powerful Approach to Housing

Rather than sleeping in a dormitory, Turnabout students spend their nights in a family environment. These host families become an amazing support group for the students as well as the student's family and help to encourage their progress.

This approach to housing is not only healthier for the teen, but provides many significant therapeutic advantages as well.

Benefits of the Host-Family Model

Turnabout's unique housing approach allows teens hands-on pratice of the new skills they are learning in a family setting where they are required to contribute. During the evenings and on weekends teens participate with their host-family in games, fun, and work.

Our experience has shown that having a solid, hand-picked host family who can provide support, structure, and ecouragement accelerates the recovery process.

This Unique housing program has become very meaningful to our students, their parents, and to referring professionals across the country.

Testimonial: Housing Was a Critical Part of Our Son's Success

It is difficult to put into words the effect you have had on our son. One short year ago, we flew to Salt Lake City to entrust our son to your staff. Although I was apprehensive to leave him, it was a relief not to have to worry about where he was and what he was doing.

At that time our son was deeply troubled, addicted to marijuana, was caught stealing, was rebellious, and not capable of coping in a positive way with his life. He had little regard for himself let alone anyone else. The final issue that brought us to the decision to enroll him was when he got arrested and told the police officer that he would steal again. There is no question in our mind this was a cry for help.

Through your patience, understanding, support and confidence our real son is back. He thrived and successfully completed high school at Stillwater Academy. The small class sizes and experienced teaching staff contributed greatly to his success. In addition, we feel that the housing program at Turnabout allowed Matt to experience a family environment during his stay and was a critical component in matt's success.

Your leadership program helped our son regain his confidence and will to live life to its fullest. The friendships he made were some of the first of many friends to come. He has wisely chosen not to see any of his old friends and is working hard at establishing new healthy relationships. He is attending the junior college and getting close to land a part time job at the YMCA. He is attending AA meetings, and Willow Creek Community Church functions on a regular basis, and building a strong foundation of new friends that are appropriate. We could not be more pleased or more grateful.

P.S. After two short months in the program he told us, "I wish my old friends had the opportunity to be in a program like this."

Sincerely yours,

Bob & Gigi
