Daybreak Canyon, Idaho . help needed
« on: July 07, 2009, 03:21:06 AM »
Located very remote in Idaho, Daybreak Canyon markets themselves as a Green RTC (Everything has to be green and environment-friendly today. It is a fashion).

Behavior modification strategy according to their FAQ page:
Quote
We use a combination of a level system, breathers, time outs, and manual restraints through a nationally recognized program (only if the youth poses an eminent threat to themselves, others, or significant property damage).

The recommend use of transport companies. From their admission page:
Quote
Occasionally we realize that youth do not want to come to our program. We are prepared for that and can even refer parents to escorting companies that can safely transport their youth to Daybreak Canyon. The closest airport is Twin Falls and we can provide transport from the airport to Daybreak Canyon.

One of the founders come from Idaho Youth Ranch. But the other one comes from a RTC in Provo, Utah.
As we are preparing to make an entry to the Wiki system about this facility, we will ask for help to find out where Larry McArthur worked before.

I remember looking into this place about 6 months ago, when they weren't completely off the grid yet, and they had no students. Looks like they have at least one now.

Why be green? Why not? For the owners and founders of Daybreak Canyon being green was important from the beginning and defines the essence of this new business. "Being green is not a fad, it is absolutely necessary to protect the world we live in for future generations", reports co-founder Larry McArthur. He adds, "preserving, conserving, and reusing resources goes hand and hand with working with troubled youth, and helping them, become the responsible citizens and leaders of tomorrow!"

What makes Daybreak Canyon so unique? Daybreak Canyon is the first "Green" Residential Treatment Center in the country. Located on 160 acres at historic Magic Hot Springs, Daybreak Canyon embraces the natural setting and features of the property. Completely off the grid, Daybreak Canyon generates all of its own electricity with a generator using waste vegetable oil collected from businesses in Twin Falls, Idaho. The facility heats in the winter from hot water siphoned from one of the natural hot springs. They actively recycle, compost, garden, and reuse and reduce waste as much as possible. They also make their own bio-fuel from the collected waste vegetable oil to use in their vehicles.

"I believe through hands on practice of conservation and eco-friendly living, troubled youth will develop better understanding of how choices and actions affect the people around them and their own lives", says co-founder Dustin Larna.

Daybreak Canyon opened for business on June 22nd, 2009. The admission of the first resident marks the culmination of a several year process and the fulfillment of career long dreams for the two owners Larry McArthur and Dustin Larna. Despite the trials of a major economic downturn mid-project, Daybreak Canyon stands as a reminder that diligence, hard work, and ingenuity can still make dreams come true.

Daybreak Canyon is licensed by the State of Idaho as a Residential Treatment Center for troubled boys ages 12-17. Young men from around the country and within Idaho will come to Daybreak Canyon to live at the facility. Youth will attend school onsite, participate in individual and group counseling, recreation activities, have constant supervision day and night, work on community service projects, learn about green living and living in a facility that is completely off the grid, and a wide array of other activities; parents will participate in family counseling, family weekends, and parenting classes, and have the option to participate in our innovative super outings and international service trips.

I remember researching this. They both have backgrounds in large juvenile justice type places; they appear to have met each other at one of them. Lemme see if I can re-find this stuff...
