All the most anybody here (admins, which are myself and ginger) can see is an IP address.  My external IP address is 82.123.238.186.  The most I can tell from that (or any ip address) is approximately where a person is located.  This, however is not entirely accurate.  If you take that number I just gave to you, google "ip locate" or go to a site like this (link), you can tell that I am in Paris, France... Street address?  Nope.  It's approximate (and it's not really even close).

That is ALL anybody can tell from an IP address.  Not who you are or what is your name, phone number or address.  Nothing like that.  An approximate location that is at best within 10 or so miles and on average somewhere in the right geographical region (but sometimes on the another continent entirely).

If you're paranoid enough that even that is too much for anybody to know, you can use a proxy (google it) which masks your IP address so nobody will even know that.  Most often, such utilities are used to get around website bans, but since nobody ever gets banned from here, there really isn't much point.

Thank you very much for indulging a mildly insane worrier.

If you don't want to take the time to answer this, don't--t's off topic; please ignore, but how did I get hacked after I started posting on /b/?

Does your computer transmit other stuff besides you ip that administrators (or hackers) can see, just by posting on fornits? Or forums in general?

Well. You were polite in asking, so i'll respond.

Well.  My first question would be: how do you know you got "hacked"?  Lots of times, people get upset when their computer behaves erratically and blame it on all sorts of things from "viruses" to "hacking".  More often than not, it's neither of those (usually a combination of user error, windows, and shit software). You can have a windows PC completely isolated form the internet and it will still start acting crazy after a while.

What precisely happened?

Well.  It transmits lots of information, but none of it is really personally identifiable.  For example, a web browser will tell a web server which browser it is (some sites have different versions for different browsers....  or some sites require a certain browser and check).  It'll also say which platform (windows, linux, mac os), and architecture (ppc, intel) you are running... but none of that identifies you, or is even kept long-term (no reason to).
