The steps of A.A. are not religious they do mention god and higher powers but that does not have anything to do with a Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or any other religious ideology of god. If one wants they can choose to believe in the group as a higher power or god. they can CHOOSE to believe what ever they want as long as it is something greater than them"

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can, and
Wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as the
pathway to peace.
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it.
Trusting that He will make all things
right if I surrender to His will.
That I may be reasonably happy
in this life,
And supremely happy with Him
forever in the next.

So apparently, if you take the group as your higher power, the group will make all things right if you surrender to it's will.  And you will be supremely happy with the group forever in the next life.

Point being that although AARC may share some characteristics of a religion, there really isn't enough to hang your hat on."
