asking for items.. the Straight way
« on: March 09, 2002, 05:01:00 PM »
I was thinking back to this, lately I've been having a lot of memories of this place, does anyone remember having to "ask" to pick things up when you were a 1st phaser?
If you did it by accident.. what do you remember in group saying about it?

I know I shouldn't re-hash the past (geez, can I say that word "hash"??).. however, I thought that maybe recollection could help some of us overcome the brutality of embarrassment and ignorance we all went through then.

Ya, it actually depended on whom your oldcomer was. Is that what they were called? oldcomers? It's been 15-16 years for me, straight/springfield.

Anyways, I remember having to ask to pick up a pen, toothbrush, to stand up/ sit down. Especially at the last home I was at, 'cause
I had copped out (escaped!) 3 times within a month, and they sent me to the strictest, out in the boonies, bumfuck place they could.

We had to ask to pick up anything, ask to stand up, sit down, and to "talk out" when we wanted to talk to a fellow newcomer. There were no exceptions or variances from one oldcomer to another, if you didnt ask or if the oldcomer failed to notice that you didnt, it was grounds for being FOS. Being "unaware" was huge too....every single newcomer had to be in your sight at all times except for when the door was locked to the bedroom at night and the room and newcomers had been searched.  It usually meant a lot of walking backwards and tripping just trying to watch everyone all at once....try it with just one oldcomer (me) and up to five newcomers every night...two or three of which were misbehaving and trying to run out of the room on you.

I really felt like slave labor there towards the end, my shitty host sister was on fifth phase and always left me alone with all the responsibilites at night....I was sleep deprived, and so busy watching over them that I ceased to have any time to my own "therapy" and was confronted in group about not "standing out more in group".

It became a huge releif when I got put on refreshers and didnt have to watch ANYONE when I got home.

My host sister was a real bitch, she threatened me with some piddly little bullshit whenever I tried to ask her for more help with the home situation.  She was a fifth phaser so of course she was untouchable.

I actually got confronted in group once about some newcomer girl not writing her MI the night before.....to their suprise I informed them that she hadnt even BEEN in my host home the previous night, and wasnt even my newcomer.  Of course I, got ripped anyway for something like not being aware of the girls razors or some shit...and ended up on the potential FOS list for the next rip rap.  Wow, it is funny how it all comes back.

oh yeah, we weren't allowed to talk to other newcomers period. We had to talk through the oldcomer, like "ask him to talk about his past",while being in the newcomers presence of course, cause if he wasn't there that was "squawking" or talking behind someones back, which equated to being fos.

In response to "not being aware" sometimes the walls of a house were too narrow that not everyone could fit through them all at the same time.. especially when I was on 2nd phase at my mom's house.
I asked to hold thier arms up so I could see thier hands.. as long as they did that, I had no problem.

I remember those showers I had to take when I was on 2nd phase.. all the newcomers had to put their hands inside the shower so I could be aware of them when I took one.. it sucked when I got soap in my eye and had to report it to staff for being unaware for a few seconds.. they didn't say much to me because it only happened once and since I became honest about it, they were actually o.k. with it.. they just told me "don't let it happen again"

You know what's really sad? The staff member you reported youself to was probably all serious and then walked in the office and laughed about it. Unless it was a trainee, then reporting ANYTHING was takling your life into your own hands. God I hated those people; small minded with a little power to lord about.

Sad, I spent freakin over 3 years in that joint, a place out of hell. Anyone here remember William Rollins, what a crock of shit. Does anyone remember the peanut butter diets? Being put in a intake room so all the staff could get a piece of you. What about the bug juice all the time. Rules rap always sucked. I'll be honest, to this day I am still freaked out about all the rules and shit. I cannot get it out of my head. I don't know, I am 39 years old now and still that place haunts me. This sucks and I would like to set the record straight. Dr. Newton and all the assholes suck. Anyone here in Orlando let me know because I would love to try to set the record straight. Peace.

I remember that.  Although I don't remember getting confronted in Group about accidently picking something up without asking first, I was nailed to the wall in the foster home. My last Oldcomer in Cincinnati was pretty cool and wasn't so strict.  In St. Pete I had to ask if I could get some toilet paper to wipe my ass first.  How stupid.

In 1988 Atlanta, forks, spoons & butter knives were "common sense", where newcomers never had to ask for that stuff during dinner.  Newcs never had to ask to pick up whatever they were drinking either.  Newcs did have to ask to reload their plates though, I think.  Newcomers also never asked to stand up or sit down.  There was no getting permission to talk to other first phasers.  It was fully banned.

My favorite host home was one next door to a girls' host home where we got to sneak out all the time, smoke cigarettes, drink dad's beer, watch porn movies & get laid.  Just kidding.

Well my suggestion to you is to move back in with your parents and then you will be forced to repress it all. It really works! ::bangin::

As a Newcomer I could talk to another newcomer with Staff permission and supervision.
