Mark Caldwell distraught over son’s conviction

November 7, 2007

I spoke to Mark Caldwell this evening. I knew by the sound of his voice that the news was not going to be good.

His first words were, “they found Justin guilty.â€

November 7, 2007 -- Justin Caldwell has been in the clutches of the Florida Dept of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) his entire adolescence. He now sits in the Jackson County Correctional Facility awaiting trial on charges his father says are false.

Justin Caldwell is nearly 19. At 13 he went through a rough time much like other adolescents. Most kids are able to work through their issues with the help and guidance of their parents. This family didn’t get that chance.

At 13 DJJ sentenced Justin to 12-18 mos. in a residential treatment center. Justin is almost 19 and still in custody.

Caldwell said, “During Justin’s nearly 6-yr stint at 2 DJJ facilities my son suffered a broken nose, a broken arm, back problems, staples in his forehead, and bruising. Some of the abuse was caught on video.â€

The article leaves out what the boy did to cause staff to need to intervene. Staff doesn't sit on students for no reason, he could of been threatening other students.

Yep, at Straight kids were "restrained" for such horrendous offenses as....

not keeping their feet flat on the floor

not keeping their hands on their knees

scratching an itch after being told not to move

turning around in your seat

not looking at the person speaking

not "motivating" enough to get called on

and very often kids would get yanked off the toilet for not being fast enough

That is a good point, but I look at it from a different angle.

What did the staff do to cause the boy to attack him?

this is the reason why institutionalization is such a bad idea.....asshole, you don't restrain people for threatening. In schools if someone is "talking smack" the teachers don't pin the kid down, UNLESS he is being violent.

These places use force as a means of control when it is not appropriate, damagin the psyches of the kids in their care
