Care Center on Probation After Boy's Death
October 13th, 2007 @ 3:52pm
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- State regulators have put a Draper youth facility on probation and cited operators for providing inadequate medical care to a 14-year-old California boy who died there in June.

Disciplinary action against Youth Care of Utah was part of a settlement reached between the facility and lawyers for the state Human Services Office of Licensing.
settlement....hmmm....sounds like they have someone in their pocket

Youth Care was not fined and is free to accept new clients.
Now, that's real strong incentive for them not to kill any more kids.

Brendan James Blum was found dead at the center on June 28.

An autopsy concluded he died after his bowel twisted and cut off the blood supply to his small intestine.

A police investigation found the boy had been vomiting and suffering from diarrhea, but that staff failed to contact an on-call nurse.
and that surprises who?

On Thursday, prosecutors charged two counselors from the residential facility with one count each of third-degree felony abuse or neglect of a child.

Youth Care officials say Blum complained only of flu-like symptoms.

Murderers, they are all murderers, and the people at the boot camp to. I dont understand how people could let them off for killing kids. Thats my thoughts anyway.

I just don't get how the officials can sleep at night, my guess is they don't want to fall off the money train, or are too lazy to want to do their job.  Utah wake up! These are our precious children, they are not throw away kids.

Question: Who appointed Ken Stettler to his position and just HOW long has he been in that position?  It's gotta be at least since 94, but maybe earlier.

Utah can start by replacing Stettler.  Perhaps a petition calling for his resignition would be one way to send a message to Utah that it's time for a change of guard?  How many children have died on his watch?

Ken Stettler Named Licensing Director
Ken Stettler has been named director of the Office of Licensing in the Department of Human
Services. A 25-year DHS employee, Stettler formerly worked in the Division of YouthCorrections.?I want to make the focus of the office more customer friendly, both for the public and the
providers we license,? Stettler said.
Stettler has been involved in licensing issues for many years, first in Youth Corrections and later
when the Office of Licensing was created.
?My primary interest in licensing came from the years I spent there where I realized the
importance the office has in protecting all Human Services clients,? Stettler said. ?A lot of
children come to Utah for treatment from other states and sometimes our office is the only
agency regulating those providers.?
Stettler worked on the initial licensing of youth wilderness programs in Utah and was responsible
for licensing all youth programs statewide from 1990 until 1995.
Stettler has a master?s degree in management and youth leadership and a bachelor?s degree in
therapeutic recreation, both from Brigham Young University.
He replaces Reta Oram who retired in April.
