Seeing information on this facility

MHYR has been a featured program for troubled teens and young adults on the Dr. Phil Show. When Dr. Phil asked his staff to find the best youth treatment program in the United States - Mountain Homes was....

Marty Bingham - Program Director / Owner

Marty BinghamEducation:

I attended Utah Valley State College with an Academic Scholarship. My majors were Marketing and Business with special interest in wood working.
Professional Work Experience:

I have worked with over 500 students now at the Mountain Homes Youth Ranch over many years. Prior to MHYR I worked in a Wilderness Treatment Program. I also have extensive outdoor skills experience and scouting experience.
Interests:

Fishing, outdoor recreation, working with troubled youth and helping them find their true path.

Comments on MHYR:

I feel I have the greatest job in the world because I get to see the students when they are first transported to MHYR and then when they graduate. They often come in with rough edges and then by the time they graduate I am always amazed at how different they look and act. The changes youth undergo at MHYR are so thorough and lasting. I am never discouraged when a teen shows up with a poor attitude because as I have seen countless times that attitude disappear and the real character of the youth come into full view. I also enjoy using my life experiences, which help me empathize, with the troubled youth. I enjoy reaching out to them and helping them overcome whatever problems they are struggling with. I've always been of a mind to work hard to gain each student's trust and respect. I value integrity and enjoy teach how this all ties together to create life success.

Mountain Homes is located in Colorado, there is more info about it here.

http://www.eprogramsearch.com/Program.p ... outh_Ranch

Also, not that I am a fan of MHYR, but who cares that his degree is in marketing and business? My degree is in finance and I currently work in graphic design. Though these are two totally different fields, my finance background has helped me become a much more successful graphic designer than I otherwise would have been. I hope for the sake of the kids that go there that he really does enjoy his job, and I would imagine that as is necessary with any business on the planet that his marketing and business skills come in handy.

I just think that if we are going to bash programs that it should be on factual information. It sounds like fifth grade to not like someone just because they are overweight or because you are already jaded about the industry. Problems should be exposed for what they are, but not in such a juvenile manner. At least not if you really want people to listen to you and you really want to help effect change.

There are enough people here that could really organize and help spur changes in the industry, but only if they are organized. As long as sooo many threads like this one continue to just be whiney it will never happen - Who is really going to listen and care about a bunch of whiners? However, I believe thoughtful organized debaters could influence some change.

Best Regards

Mountain Homes Youth Ranch charges $325 per day; and it runs an 84 day program ($27,300) and a 105 day program ($34,125).
MHYR offers a "reduction in fees" for cash-up-front.

There iare "out-fitting fees"-- $750 Winger  $650 Summer  $500 Summer.

MHYR also charge $285 for a parental seminar.
These fees do not include transportation--which can include recommended transport/escort services.

Parental contact is advertised as "conference calls."
Education is advertised as "correspndence courses."
It appeares MHYR uses a PHASE SYSTEM similiar to WWASP's.

A goolle search gives no background or previous work history for MARTY BINGHAM or ROB CALDWELL.
Where do these people come from?  What are their qualifications for working with teens in a "wilderness program that offers therapy" for a range of issues from -- defiance to ADHD, ODD, Depression, drug and alcolhol problems?

Their contract

Preety shitty place it looks like.  For 18 and over too...  It's in Utah.

Their contract here

"During the first 24 hours your child is expected to remain silent. The student can ask
questions of their staff when absolutely necessary but are not allowed to communicate
with other group members. This period of observation helps the student understand the
dynamic of the group and gives them the opportunity to reflect on the reasons they came
to Mountain Homes. The length of the orientation period depends fully on the student’s
willingness to participate. When the student is ready to begin working the program the
orientation period is complete."

Oh great, an endorsement by Dr. Phool -- a TV actor who less than a year ago paid $10.5 million to settle a lawsuit against his "Shape Up" weight loss products, which apparently some customers thought were completely ineffective.

Maybe he should've given his endorsement to one of those bogus "Fat Camp" wilderness programs. At least that line of work -- the latest diet fads -- would fall under his actual area of expertise.
