SMTC Thinking Error BS
« Reply #1 on: September 04, 2007, 07:16:16 AM »
I was always offended at the fact that the staff and therapists seemed to overemphasize the thinking error crap. if a resident was expressing a valid point, everything was always used against them as thinking error usage. For example: Therapist - "Jake, how do you feel today"?   Redident -"Well, I am very sad because my brother died".    Therapist - "Jake, I know you recently experienced a loss, but I will not tolerate you using a POOR ME thinking error to manipulae me". This shit happened all the time and i hated the punitive and degrading use of thinking error to blame the kid. I also found the use of Seclusion very unsettling. A kid on the unit i was on (Gateway) was often locked in seclusion for trival things like cursing, or taking too long a shower. The behavior Shapping Program point cards were stupid. So were freezes, AP's, GI's, and HRSA, LRSA, MER, EW structures.

Hello my name is Evelyn and I am a Private Investigator in San Antonio, Texas. I am investigating San Marcos Treatment Center. If any one would like to speak to me about San Marcos Treatment please contact me at 210-979-0733.

Welcome and thank you.  If you wanted, you could make an entire career investigating the facilities of the "Troubled Teen industry."  There's plenty of wrongdoing to look into.

"The ricketty and scrofulous little wretch who first sees the light in a work-house, or in a brothel, and who feels the effects of alcohol before the effects of vital air, is not equal in any respect to the ruddy offspring of the honest yeoman; nay, I will go further, and say that a prince, provided he is no better born than royal blood will make him, is not equal to the healthy son of a peasant." TX is troubled teen heaven for an investigator. I imagine San Marcos is the former Devereaux. It was G-d awful from what I heard. I heard more than one count, too. As for PI's, I want others to know that, there is a 10 year limitation on lawsuits. I got sucked in by a PI one time and after telling him what I saw and how I was treated, he told me. Be wary.

I too found the therapists and level system to have to much negative influence. about that seclusion mentioned I'm not sure which is worse not allowing kids to form friendships even with staff much less the various ages of peers to be found or the fact that its a bunch of drugged up kids locked up togather... honestly I can see how it is difficult to impossible for many of the kids accepted into a place as severe as the brown schools but the only things kids really learn there (having been there a year and a half myself for anger management) is what they're surrounded by. anyone whose ever actually been thru a treatment center knows what I'm talking about but most ppl like us either cant have kids from all the drugs they put you on in places like that or perhaps have decided as a result that the worlds too crazy to try and teach another and take responsibility for them...

I dont know whats up with the private investigator stuff but as I'm pretty sure any of the docs screw ups I could point out are past the limit by now to take to court but if that investigator wants to ask around I'm one to contact since no one else seems to be volunteering... if it ends in something to improve the schooling or the discipline plans involved in that school I'd be happy to help.

Your story, as much or as little of it as you care to tell, might be very helpful and validating for others to read here ... whether or not it can be of any use in legal endeavors. :nods:

I was appalled about how the staff treated me and other residents around me. They are NOT nurturing which is inexcusable since this is a treatment center and not a torture chamber. One, they were mostly too rough with the students, even when they were aggressive and would push and shove them until they were restrained. My first restraint I passed out from cause a staff accidentely was on my chest. I then woke up in the same place and was sore all over which told me that they didn't even come to my aid when I passed out. (which is where many end up dying because of that) There was once this young student who was picked up by her arms and shoved up against a wall as a staff was screaming at her. It was very hard to watch and she looked so scared and hopeless. They would often tease and bully other students to control them (which is hypocritical since many of the students were manipulative) and they would overuse punishments like freezes and AP's that often times wouldn't make any sense. I always lived on constant fear cause they often came at random even when I was behaving well.
Like if they took too long in the shower or took naps back in the unit when told not to cause you were not allowed to take naps during the day, it only was allowed at scheduled bedtimes weather they were tired or not. And often times when I did those small little things they would keep threatening me with freezes and AP's and then would eventually call in CSO which would then threaten me to seclusion (which they did once when I was asking for a sprite to make me feel better when I had a Stomach Bug. They didn't care cause I lost my vending privilege for the day while this other girl who was also sick DID have a sprite and she was on the lowest card level which was purple) which was ice cold and made me feel even worse both physically and mentally. Worst of all, I wasn't being aggressive towards them, I was just pleading for something to settle my stomach cause I was nauseous and in pain. They don't even care about your health or well-being, one time I had my dinner taken away by another staff member saying that I didn't deserve to eat after I got into an argument with another girl.
I just hope that one day this facility and others owned by Brown Schools will be shut down. Even after 5 years I still occasionally have nightmares about this place.

In what way is this funny! :jawdrop: It's not funny at all. There's even a blog http://rtcabuse.blogspot.com/ about having these types of facilities (including this one) to be investigated and shutdown. I'm trying my best in hopes that this message will go out to legislation to pass laws limiting and banning this so-called tough love.

To any who may still be interested:
I was here for over a month in 2007 and remember witnessing a very large (240+ lb) staff member grabbing a small wiry 16 or 17 yearold resident by the neck and slamming him headfirst into the gymnasium floor, fracturing his skull. Essentially this was caused by the staff member feeling disrespected when the resident walked away from him and stood against a wall when asked to do something. I remember there being a lot of commotion and worry over this on the part of the staff member and staff members in general as  obviously something unacceptable had happened. But the paperwork was fudged and the man got away with it and later bragged t o our class about similar past incidents of getting away with assaulting residents.

Wow that's an all time low, was this kid alright? It seems that this staff member and many others are mentally ill. Was this guy with CSO? Because there usually the ones that would so something like this.

Haven't heard anything about San Marcos but I have heard of a program called Crash in San Diego that sounds like it could be pretty nasty.
