Two youths being held at a north-east London detention centre, which serves as a secure detention and custody setting for youth between the ages of 12 and 16, barricaded themselves in a room, caused extensive property damage and required a police negotiator to help subdue them, Wednesday (July 18).

London police were called to assist at the Genest Youth Detention Centre, 1670 Oxford St. E., at around 2 p.m., after the two male young offenders had assaulted a staff member at the facility.

When officers arrived they found the youths had positioned furniture to block anyone from entering a common room at the detention centre.

"They had damaged the electronic equipment in the room as well as smashed several glass-paned windows. The youths had also filled their socks with broken glass and were swinging them in a threatening manner at staff and police," police said.

With the assistance of a police negotiator officers were able to subdue the two youths.

Police said the youths caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the room.

Two 14-year-old males have each been charged with property damage exceeding $5000, assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

Wonder what the negotiator offered them.
Probably to not pepper spray them?
