Well, power concedes nothing without a demand. And there's a whole new generation of enforcers who, while they may not get off so much on the drug menace fairy tale, they do most certainly get off on the thug work under any pretense.

As to genetically engineered foods, really I think the true frankenfoods will fail all on their own. Sure, you can make a tomato double size and whatever color you want, but it's sterile, tastes like water and doesn't do too well in competition with normal weeds.
The really evil stuff that Monsanto is doing, in my opinion, is their work with the terminator seeds. These plants are engineered to NOT set fruit or bear seed unless they're sprayed with a chemical you can only get from Monsanto. And these are the plants being used to replace traditional crops in starving regions. WHO is not at all above using starvation as a weapon of control.
But I'm not too afraid of the other stuff, really. I try to avoid buying it because I don't like what the companies are doing with their proceeds and I grow heirlooms whenever possible cause I'm a skin flint and don't want to have to go out and buy new seed all the time.
The government is much more interested in preserving the purity of its ideology than it is in allowing patients to get effective medicine.
