CHARLES CATES
« on: May 29, 2007, 05:01:39 PM »
I have heard that Charles Cates gave notice the Friday
after the Fire and Graduation...seems weird for the 'perennial'
to leave .  Does anyone have the 'skinny' on what transpired.
Was he freaked out after the Fire or what?  He wrote all those
lies to the current parents about the lawsuit (the families involved
in the class suit) and the Dahlonega Nugget.  He was very willing then to take the fall, so what gives?

He was likely going to quit at that time anyway, regardless of the fire.  Graduation time, right before summer, is a logical time for him to turn in his notice.

Do you REALLY think that anything " logical" has happened at HLA at least since September 2006 when the petition for the lawsuit was filed?

Charles Cates has already been removed from HLA's website. 6 teachers are now left at HLA-Foy Tootle-English, Sam Tanner-Math, Hawley Stevens-History, Greer Dover-English, Martha Kinney-Spanish and Ian Adkins-Science. 6 teachers left, Academic building burned to the ground with I am sure all textbooks, computers etc., Charles Cates-the headmaster retiring the day after the fire. Very few students left after graduation. Boy, that really sounds like a school that would costs $6000 a month that parents should be chomping at the bit to send their children 2. Ed Consultants, don't get knocked down when you open the flood gates to show all your prospective families how wonderful an education you can provide with 6 teachers and no academic building..

The special ed teacher must also be there as required by law...

Mitch was good w/ the students. I believe that he will be missed.

Are you disappointed in Hawley Stevens because he is still staying at HLA knowing what he knows?

My gut instinct from what I know about Hawley and how is was with the kids is that I GENUINELY believe he stays there for the kids. The money CAN'T be that good, and we all know he is a wonderful person. He is very honest and compassionate. I believe that he thinks he can make a bigger difference staying and being a decent person and wonderful teacher to the students there, as opposed to leaving them in that shit hole and being replaced by a fuck-head teacher who shares Len and most other staff's mentality there.

I'm not saying I agree with it, just saying thats what I think are his intentions.

I have to agree. The few sincere, caring staff there while I was definitely made HLA life more bearable. Hawley was among the handful of them. If it weren't for them, I'm sure more of us would have given up and ran away... probably ending up in wilderness or dropped into a later peer group. He's a good guy and he is honestly  invested in trying to make sure that the kids there actually LEARN something in an what is (or at least used to be) a total joke of an academic curriculum... and he's good at it. I'm personally so thankful that he was teaching while I was there.

And then along comes Mary
And does she want to set them free, and let them see reality
From where she got her name
And will they struggle much, when told that such a tender touch of hers
Will make them not the same
