Teen fat camp TV show
« on: May 18, 2007, 05:48:56 AM »
is airing in Australia under a new name teen Fit camp after complaints about the name being exploiatative. The setting is surprise, surprise Aspen's own Wellsprings.
There is an Oz TV forum. Anyone care to give your view of what really goes on to all the Australians who will be breathing a sigh of relief about these kids getting the "help they need". Please do so at the following address. Remember nobody here knows a thing. The perspective of Americans is useful and needed

Great post hanzo. Perhaps someone may wish to put another in reminding the audience that this camp is run by aspen and of some of its atrocities. Otherwise everyone may assume this is a different organisation and that they only take kids who want to go.

Afterall the ads are presenting it as a sort of inspiring and uplifting gentle program. it give the strong impression that the kids want to go. Obviously the complaints about the name gave the network cold feet about putting a tough love spin on it in the manner of UK brat camp.

Hi, do you mind sharing with us your experience?

EDIT: Also this forum is unmoderated and many people here have been abused in other programs, so if people seem disgruntled thats probably why. However most folks that post here are cool and have pretty good information on the teen help industry. Visit the ISAC site if you want to read more about this problem in the States.

3 age reviews/ stories on this show. There tends to be an air of unease toward the concept of this show being exploitative. However Unlike Bratcamp which openly celebrated treating kids like shit, fitcamp is very much marketed as an inspiring tale of hope.
The episode i saw also does not make it look tough love or depravation based in its approach at all.
Most reasonable people would assume that in spite of the tears this would be a worthwhile thing for an overweight kid. Does anyone care to write to the Editor of the age with a brief discription of what other "inspiring"  Aspen wilderness programs entail?
The tack i would take in order to be taken seriously is that this one program may not be abusive but the parent company Aspen runs plenty of others. Some American voices would be handy here.

I just have a problem in general with putting kids on TV, calling them fat and then make money letting everyone sit around their tv sets eating pizza and watching them struggle to lose weight.  Maybe voting one or 2 off because their thyroid condition prevented them from losing it as quickly as someone else.  What a circus.

But then, I guess, it is just a television show.  No real hurt feelings, right?

Yeah, TheWho likes to see kids abused, humilated and used for profit behind closed doors so people won't have to feel "uneasy" about it.

He also has fun re-abusing sexual abuse victims over the internet, making fun of their abuse and implying they deserved it.

If TheWho saw with his own eyes some of the horrible events that took place to survivors who post here, he would be begging forgiveness.

Part of the cost of developing a television program is determining who your audience will be.   Aspen spent hundreds of thousands of dollars researching this and once they determined the type of person who will be tuning in they then approached corporations to sponsor the show.  It will be interesting to see what type of people they target and think will be watching….overweight people?  Kids?  Parents?  Thin people who like to see fat people struggle?  So will we see “Slimfast and golds gym commercials”  or “Wendy’s and Krispy Crème”?  Outdoor  equipment manufacturers or vacation packages.

My guess is that they will be targeting parents with teenagers,( low to middle income)
Not sure I will get a chance to see it tonight, though.

A little competition

Shaq's Big Challenge
http://abc.go.com/specials/shaqsbigchallenge.html
Tuesdays 9/8c beginning on June 26
Childhood obesity is a fast-growing epidemic in the U.S. - obese children face a shorter lifespan due to weight-related illnesses such as increased risk of heart disease and diabetes. But hope has arrived for America's children. Shaquille O'Neal, a four-time NBA champion and a role model to millions, is on a quest to battle this scourge and help kids across America live more healthfully. His new series, Shaq's Big Challenge, will debut TUESDAY, JUNE 26 (9:00-10:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network and is produced by RDF USA (Wife Swap).

Shaq and his hand-picked "dream team" of experts embark on a crusade to help transform six obese middle school youngsters from Florida into healthy, fit kids - and along the way, demonstrate how other communities nationwide can help fight childhood obesity. In Shaq's Big Challenge he puts six obese youngsters through the most intense, emotional and rewarding time of their young lives. He is aided by six specialists, including: Shaq's own physician and trainer, Dr. Carlon "Doc" Colker, M.D.; personal trainer Tarik Tyler; nutritionist Joy Bauer; childhood obesity expert Dr. William Muinos, M.D. from Miami Children's Hospital; Food Network celebrity chef Tyler Florence; and Shaq's Louisiana State University coach Dale Brown. Together they go into the kids' homes and, schools, then expand their scope to meet with the local school and government officials to develop and implement a wellness program for the children of the community, and later for the entire state of Florida.

This mission does not end with these six children. The goal is for every child in the local schools to take part in Shaq's plan. His dream team addresses the challenges of providing tasty, kid-friendly nutritious meals on a budget, as well as incorporating more exercise into the kids' days. For instance, physical education is no longer mandatory in many public schools across the U.S., so Shaq and his team will develop revolutionary programs to allow every child to get consistent exercise while at school. Once he has accomplished his mission at this school, Shaq and his team will have laid the groundwork to achieve their ultimate goal: to create a fitness plan that could be accepted across the whole of Florida and serve as a template for the entire country. Shaq's Big Challenge will change the way we approach the health of a nation -- one child, one community, one state at a time, until we truly are a happier, healthier, fitter America.

Executive producers are Rick Ringbakk, Greg Goldman, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Coelen, Christopher Handy, Perry Rogers, Michael Parris and Stephen Lambert. The series is produced by RDF USA. It is based on the hit U.K. series, Unfit Kids.

I'm to tired to post but google "Ian Wright's Unfit Kids" and troll some of the forums for incite into the program. It looks like it's going to be bumbling confrontation of fat kids made to look like some epic struggle. In short not good, just good spin... I'll post links to what I found later....

Turning off now....
