need footage for TBS video
« on: February 12, 2007, 06:40:13 AM »
So...

I'm an idiot. Why? Cause I actually took Gookie up on a challenge, and now, instead of a cute funny little bit I was going to do on side effects of psych meds for my editing class, I have the monumental task of trying to pare down to about 2-5 minutes the horrors of the TBS industry for a video.

As a result, I need footage. As much of it as I can find. And it can't be copyrighted. (Might be some flexibility regarding that.)

I already have the Martin Lee Anderson stuff, but I am in the process of finding a better version, the one I have cuts off towards the end. AND, it is debatable whether I will use it, since it shows a kid getting killed.

It can be stills, it doesn't need to be video. I know that I have seen very little in terms of images within facilities, with the exception of some I have seen for TB (and I believe they were copyrighted). I have a buttload of pictures from CEDU, but none of which showing things like propheets, workshops and raps. All the pics are of happy people. Besides, that would be a conflict of interest, since I'm the one making the video. (Unless I want it to be autobiographical, which I don't.)

My other issue is how to streamline my focus. I can't just talk about how all of this is bad. It would take forever, and I only have a few minutes. I've thrown out the idea of focusing on one facility, because that sidesteps the issue of it being systemic. It needs stats, facts, methods, money, and there needs to be an arc to the story.

I'm kind of all over the place with this right now. I might actually end up withdrawing from the class this quarter at the very end, take it again next quarter, and make the video a two-quarter project.

Anyway, any direction people can point me regarding reference footage would be great. Any other ideas would also be helpful.

I know it's kind of a stupid question. You think I would know all the places to find this shit already, but I don't.

Right now, I'm looking at 5 weeks.

I might have to drop the class as it is, since I am woefully behind, for other reasons.

It would be a tough project to do on the side, as it requires final cut pro, which is only accessible through the school. (I don't own a mac.)

I'm going to speak with my teacher today about a plan of attack regarding subject matter and arc.

update:

Found a rather choice bit of footage with Randall Hinton talking about the whole pepper spray ordeal. What a prick.

Still need stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's another interesting query:

Does anyone here have any pictures of themselves while they were in the program? If so, would you be willing to submit?

I'm not even sure I'm going to use it, but was considering using pics of survivors with their first name, last initial, or a pseudonym, and years of internment.

Like I said, up in the air at this point, but an idea. Especially since all I have now are pics of kids who are dead.

ISACCORP has the inside edition wwasps video.

Plus the aspen ed wrist restraint and joint lock bullshit floating around as well...

make use of it.

Now if only we could get some of "over the GW" for the video of what a rap looks like...

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into that.

Yeah, I'm definitely mining isaacorp for info. For the school project, it's ok, but when I decide to publish this to youtube, I will need permission.

Hopefully I'll find the Aspen stuff. I'm sure it's simply a question of putting in the right search string.

Rap and propheet/workshop footage is tough. Even if it were attainable, I'd definitely need to blur out everyone's faces (except for staff). I know that I wouldn't want people seeing me do the kind of shit I did in those things.

I've seen a photo of a TB group, with the kids sitting on the floor. Someone posted a link to it in a thread, but I can't remember where it was. Shouldn't be too hard to find on the net, though.

Aren't the folders now considered abandoned and thus litter? Can't you just take them all and scan them up (Kids' names removed, naturally!) for everyone to see what goes on?

Who owns the property now?

Okay, operating under the assumption that this all is legal:

Take a crowbar and a shovel with you next time. Pry out floorboards, look behind desks, investigate compartments, dig where you think there might be something intact. The place is your oyster; investigate it thoroughly.

There probably won't be jack shit, but I don't know how long the place was open and stuff has a way of getting between cracks...

Who the hell is going to install security cameras on an abandoned site?

Are there fresh tracks there? No? Then no one's coming by to pick up the tapes. Unless you think they've wired them all to an exterior system somewhere far away.. yeah, right.

They probably didn't have cameras while the place was open, you think they'd spend money to install them when it's closed?

Trespassing? On whose land, exactly? Is there even so much as a "No Trespassing" sign up? People investigate abandoned buildings in America all the time. Few get arrested for it. Check your local laws if you're that worried, but I don't think anyone is going to exactly care.

And for those of you who are worried about getting in trouble for discussing it on Fornits, I point you to the "I just smoked a huge bowl of pot, I just shot up a huge load of heroin" thread on the Straight forum.

www.uer.ca

That website will tell you everything you've wanted to know about doing this sort of thing.

From what you've told us, we know the following is true:

1. Nobody's out there. Otherwise the place would be vandalized to hell and back by now.

2. Nobody (except us) cares about what got left behind, as they're obviously not going to be back for it.

3. Noise? From the looks of things you could probably scream your lungs out and no one would notice.

Nobody's there, nobody can hear you, and nobody cares.

Would God all these shitholes ended up like that.
