What's remarkable is that parents would put their kids through one of these programs, which can do a hell of a lot more damage than whatever drugs the kids were experimenting with that got them enrolled in the first place. It's testament to what a terrific job the drug warriors have done at terrifying the shit out of people.
It's also testament to this country's completely irrational pharmacological phobia that even today's hyper-reactive culture when it comes to crimes against children, Mel and Betty Sembler not only aren't in jail, they're an exalted Republican Party power couple, with Mel Sember, the former ambassador, having recently signed on to Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.
