Can't speak to other states, but in Tx we have Minor Emergency clinics. They take care of routine and minor illnesses and injuries. I don't know if they are 'required' to treat the indigent.

County clinics are available for immunizations for free or low cost, depending on income. Had a TB test there once. Miserable environment.
Run people through like cattle. First come, first serve, long waits.

Some charities work with some hospitals. A person's bill for an emergency room visit can be covered in full depending on need. The hospital handles all the paperwork. Otherwise, you receive monthly bills until its paid or goes to collections. Then the person (and their relatives/friends) will receive hounding phone calls for all eternity.

The county hospital nearest me is very busy but has some of the best doctors in the country. The poor pay according to income. They have an OB/GYN clinic. Interesting that the wealthest county in Tx is adjacent to the county this hospital is in. They provide nothing for indigent, so all their indigent utilize this hospital, creating long waits.

There's also the WIC program. Low income moms can receive coupons for free commodities if they attend WIC classes on nutrition and health. The coupons are for crap food- milk, cheese, peanut butter, juice, cereal, etc. Could be worse I guess. They also provide immunizations or referrals.

And the latest trend, Retailers (WalMart) and Pharmacies providing in-store clinic. They give you a beeper.... shop until they can see you.

I have to admit, there were two times I had to take my daughter in to the ER for massive fever....it was late at night so no clinics were avaliable....I was a single mom without insurance at the time and I remember both times they sent in this real nice lady who brought teddy bears for Gabs.  She asked me a few questions and then was very nice and left....I never realized until later she was a social worker.  I was never billed or asked to pay for either of those visits.

In 1996, Australia was stunned when 35 people were killed by Martin Bryant in the Port Arthur massacre. Howard responded by coordinating action by the state governments to heavily restrict the private ownership of semi-automatic rifles, semi-automatic shotguns and pump-action shotguns. This action and an accompanying "gun buy-back scheme" were popular with the general population but not with predominantly Coalition-voting gun owners.

This would never fly in the states, he's way too liberal.

On this was the one and only liberal thing he ever did! Unless you count most of his economic decsions. It is as if Adam Smith is in charge!

Well, this video doesn't show the Canadian medical system in a good light. But it's contrary to many reports I've heard. How often does this happen is what I'd like to know. Is this common, or is this video a marketing tool for the broker?

Actually i think Canada and the US have much to learn from each other in terms of running a health system. Canada takes the extreme position of banning market forces from entering the health arena at all and not allowing private health insurance to exist. The US comes close to the other extreme.
Canada struggles to support everybody and as a result it's middle classes go across the border anyway, the US seems Ok with leaving a lot of people extremely minimally covered, if at all. it strikes me that both places are afraid of a middle ground on this issue. One sees any govt intervention as some kind of crazy big govt commie plot, the other sees the private market as the enemy of the people in this arena.

Here are some links that look at the way other countries do it.
