Clarification on Teen Help, WWASPS
« on: March 28, 2003, 07:18:00 PM »
If we do not let these reporting agencies know the truth about WWASP/Teen Help they will continue to be a marketing tool for WWASP/Teen Help. Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly was running an article that was pretty much a plug for the WWASP/Teen Help programs. Most of the time if you share WWASP/Teen Helps abusive past they are willing to either pull that article or make a strong note of it.

"Clarification on Teen Help, WWASPS

from Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly
Posted 03/10/2003

In the Feb. 3, 2003 issue of Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly, a "BrieflyNoted" item was run concerning a campaign associated with Teen Help and the World Wide Association of Specialty Programs and Schools (WWASPS). By running the "Briefly Noted" item, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly was in no way endorsing these programs, which have a controversial history. As an objective reporter of developments in the addiction field, Alcoholism & Drug Abuse Weekly often includes announcements of initiatives or efforts by organizations in the field.

WWASPS runs a network of behavior modification programs for teens in the United States and other countries. While some parents who have sent their teens to these programs support the programs and their disciplinary techniques, others have claimed that their children have been traumatized and abused, and call the programs harsh and brutal.

According to news reports, a WWASPS facility in the Czech Republic was shut down by authorities in 1998, and WWASPS severed ties with a facility in Samoa after U.S. State Department officials in 1998 found evidence of abuse of American teens. There are also several civil lawsuits pending against WWASPS facilities. Teen Help is a component of WWASPS."
