Correction: Cheryl Sudweeks
Cheryl Sudweeks, the former co-owner of the now defunct Whitmore Academy in Nephi, was initially charged in 4th District Court with five misdemeanor counts of child abuse and two misdemeanor counts of hazing in connection with allegations involving four teens at the boarding school. In a plea agreement reached last week with prosecutors, Sudweeks pleaded no contest to four class C misdemeanor counts of hazing, which means all charges will be dismissed in a year if Sudweeks meets court-ordered requirements, including payment of a fee. A Sept. 22 article included incorrect details about the disposition of the case and the number of charges.

Why plead no contest when you could go to trial and be acquitted of all charges by a jury if you were innocent?
I thought that is what our court system was about? Innocent until proven guilty? A no contest plea is confusing. No one knows whether you are innocent or not. You are not contesting the charges is that it? What does that mean?
Can someone provide me with a link that explains what no contest means?
Thank you.

What says she can't run a program ever again in Juab County? You've got that wrong. She can in a year. And the state didn't find anything, they had no case. Call the lawyers and get the story from them if you're so curious.
