Letter to Bradenton Herald

I just received a call from the Bradenton Herald, verifying and asking permission to publish the following letter. Would one of you folks who lives down that way be so kind as to send me a copy of that paper if/when it prints?

Dear Ed,
Please consider for publication.

In his letter, John R. Messer asks, "What is so wonderful about ending prohibition? Is it the deaths and suffering caused by drunk drivers on our highways since 1932? Is it the shootings, fights or knifings caused by drinking? How about the broken marriages or lives destroyed by alcohol? Then there are the college binge drinking and riots after football games."

The wonderful thing about ending prohibition has been a marked reduction in all of those things and an even greater reduction in the danger and harm from drinking responsibly. As a bonus, the legal alcohol market generates tax revenue rather than draining public funds and, better still, repealing prohibition deprived the likes of Al Capone and Baby Faced Nelson of significant income, making them too broke to own politicians and vulnerable enough so that they could be prosecuted.

The only people ever helped by prohibition are the bootleggers.

How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate, they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to.
