Well, first off, a "hallucinogen" ain't gonna do any magic but show you shit that ain't there--it will just "fuck you up", at best you will be the equivalent of "drunk as a lord".

Psychedelics, on the other hand, ARE capable of manifesting the magic in reality.

The difference is the approach that is taken---they can actually be identical substances; the difference between the two is in the mind and intention of the user.

Hallucinogen--used in an ateempt to escape reality

Psychedelic/psychoactive/entheogen--used to manifest a different perspective on reality.

When the sacraments are seen as mere inducres of hallucinations, most of the benefits of using them are lost.

Jeeze, sorry! I just don't have such a dim view of the word, I guess. Certainly psychadelic is what I meant. Just that, well, I prefer old established language, I guess. And `tis the same thing. Like the difference betwixt drugs and medicine. I never pass on an opportunity to inject drugs into a conversation at Children's when I'm there w/ my kid. Why, it seems to almost make some of the more tight assed, DARE graduate staff see shit while the old head surgeons enjoy the scene.
