Kids ta' day
I'd say that, regardless of local contemporary statutes, there's not much you can do to convince a 17 year old young man that he's still a child once he's decided otherwise.
Yeah, if you know the kid talk with him. Give him the benefit of your experience but hold the advice unless he asks for it.
Tell the parents, whatever they do, don't reject the kid or even threaten to. Nobody wants to be a junkie, the kid will figure things out sooner or later like the rest of us. He'll still need family even when he's all grown up.
