Now I can't log in at ALL...

Also, have you considered changing the color scheme?

Sorry, the limit must be hard coded.  I went ahead and changed it back.

And yes, a style change is in progress.

Hmm....So then why the need to change to this format????

Just curious.

If that's a reference to the color thing, ask Ginger, because she's doing that.

Nah, that was a post (my own) I copied b/c I couldn't link to it. It was a question. The question was, "Why the new format if IPs could have been banned before" or something like that. My original post was somewhere in one of the recent threads (shit i ain't gonna go hunt it down now) on the str8 forum....I don't care about the color but I liked the old emoticons better, fwiw.

Banning IP's is pretty much pointless. There's just way too many of them.

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether or not to keep the old smilies. It could always be changed back, or maybe install both the new ones and the old ones.

Well that's what I thought, but Greg was saying (on that other thread) that that is what he is doing. Hey, whatever works. I'm just trying to cut through to gain an understanding as to what's being done specifically to prevent the spam. Curiosity, that's all... Wish I could cite the thread, but alas....lol. So if IPs aren't banned, then how does it screen for it?

There are several different techniques, including, but not limited to: hueristic analisys of things like HTTP variables, hit patterns, etc. And there are also content-based solutions that analyse the message itself. We've implemented some of these things and are working on more.

Sounds good... I wonder does this new php software (format) that we are using now (as opposed to the old one) come equipped with the tools necessary to implement these things?

Yeah, it just takes a little hacking. That was the main motivation for the upgrade in the first place. The old board was just that -- old, too old to be compatible with any of the stuff that we needed to set up. But the upgrade added a lot of size to the database from the conversion and the new search tables. There are over 200,000 posts, 3800 registered users, and 25,000 PMs. So, the existing shared server was unable to run the new board. That's why we got a whole new server. This has been in the works for nearly a month, and as you can see, it just went live the other day. Still lots to do... it'll get better.
