Cape School Bars Prom Dates With Criminal Records

(CBS4) SOUTH YARMOUTH A Cape Cod high school has barred the dates of at least six students from its prom because they have criminal records.

?I don?t see why it?s such a big deal,? said Russell Robie, who was banned from the prom. ?I did have a small record of alcohol possession.?

Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School administrators say they checked the backgrounds of about 40 dates because of a growing concern about non-students attending the May 13th dance. ?We have been planning this since we started dating,? said Lindsey Roderick, a senior at the school. ?It was this whole big thing, and a week before prom, I find out, oh well, your denied, you can?t go.?

Erica Eckert and Lindsey Roderick say they planned to bring their long-time boyfriends who are both recent graduates of Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich. ?They didn?t notify us that they were gonna do it,? said Erica Eckert, a senior at the school. ?They just did it and they didn?t say in the paper we had to sign that it was gonna happen.?

One parent who spoke with Bill Shields said what is wrong with trying to keep our kids safe at the prom?

Dennis - Yarmouth Regional School District released this statement regarding the incident:

?The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District, The Yarmouth Police Department, and The Dennis Police Department have worked cooperatively to provide a reasonably safe environment for the students of the Dennis-Yarmouth District. This Saturday, the Dennis-Yarmouth High School will sponsor the senior prom at the Cape Codder resort in Hyannis. At this time no students from the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School have been prohibited from attending the event, although the school rules allow the administration to deny access to any guests.?

?The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District and both police departments are reviewing their respective policies and procedures to ensure compliance and consistency with state regulations and will cooperate with appropriate state agencies concerning future practices.?
