Counterculture icon Abbie Hoffman (Vincent D'Onofrio) vows to wake up a generation by taking on the establishment. Hoffman's band of "Yippies" -- which includes his wife, Anita (Janeane Garofalo) -- holds a peaceful protest outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention that unexpectedly leads to violence. Hoffman stands trial and is freed on appeal, but he must endure constant government scrutiny that ultimately destroys his marriage.

According to Hoffman's own book, Revolution for the Hell of It, the violence was anything but unexpected.

No doubt about it- in the music world, Beefheart holds court. Sonic Youth, XTC and the Buzzcocks covered his songs. PJ Harvey ("Rid Of Me") and the Sex Pistols ("New York") quoted his lyrics. His ex-band members infiltrated the Pixies and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His fanclub also includes the Talking Heads, Pere Ubu, the Residents and Devo. The important thing here is that all of these bands themselves turned out to influential themselves so that Beefheart has become a real seminal influence in music.
