Binge drinking

I found this and was curious as to what the differing opinions might be about it.

According to a University of Minnesota student survey in February, 45 percent of students binge-drink. That means they had five or more drinks in one sitting within the previous two weeks.

Drinking: How much is too much?

Young adults often don't know how much alcohol can make them drunk -- or send them to the hospital. Mostly it depends on genes, size and gender.

Drinking in college is the norm, right? After all, about three-fourths of the nation?s college kids ages 18 to 24 drink, a number that?s held pretty steady since at least since 1992. But that number has a dark side. Binge drinking and all the dangers that come with it are on the rise.
Two years ago, Jason Reinhardt died of alcohol poisoning on the morning of his 21st birthday after trying to drink 21 drinks in an hour at a bar in Moorhead, Minn. ? an amount that could kill anyone of normal size.

His blood-alcohol content was 0.36. Patrick Kycia, 19, of Stillwater, a sophomore at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, died in October after stumbling, drunk, into the Red River. Six members of a fraternity were charged with felonies in connection with his death.

And last month St. Cloud State University student Scot Radel, 21, disappeared after a night of bar-hopping not far from campus. He hasn?t been found, but police say shoeprints similar to Radel?s were found on the bank of the Mississippi River.

According to a University of Minnesota student survey in February, 45 percent of students binge-drink. That means they had five or more drinks in one sitting within the previous two weeks.

The survey also found that students usually have little sense of how drunk they are when they drink. And almost a third who drink a lot have some kind of bad experience related to it ? from throwing up to being raped.

Young adults often have no idea, until they learn the hard way, how much is too much.

Hmm, more than 5 drinks in one sitting?  Does that mean you have to drink them all without getting up  from the table or is it just that you can't go to the bathroom?  I've gotta wonder how that rule applies in my own situation.  I'm holding a 64 oz bottle of beer, which is slightly more than 5 drinks in one container.  Here's the dilemma: If I DON'T drink it all in one sitting, it's gonna go flat.  So am I a binge drinker, or a frugal consumer who doesn't like to waste resources?  Anyways, I'm starting to get into advanced alcoholic theory, back to drunken escapades 101...

Here's a guide that's helped me out quite a bit over the years.  Since I've done a lot of drinking, and travelled some of the roads that you're better off avoiding, I figured I'd share the wisdom that's kept my liver from going on strike these many booze filled years.

Go through this list and check all that apply, if you score less than 3, you probably need to drink more.

Are you currently sitting in a jail cell?
If you answered "yes" to the previous question, did you wake up in the cell?
Has your head taken up permanent residence in a toilet bowl?
Are you currently trying to figure out just how exactly a golf cart found it's way into your living room?
Look at your hand: do you see more than 8 fingers?
Is anyone staring at you with a look of terror and/or disgust?
Look yourself over: Are there more than 2 different body fluids staining your clothes?
Are you wearing clothes?
Have you finished all the alcoholic beverages in your possession?
Do you still rely on your elders to supply you with alcohol?
If you answered "no" to the last 2 questions, why are you still reading this?  For that matter, why am I still typing this?  I'm not even drunk yet.[ This Message was edited by: Goodtobefree on 2006-03-02 16:53 ]

It's been a little less than an hour since my last post, and no one has answered my question about frugality versus alcoholism.  I decided to err on the side of caution.  If it turns out I'm a binge drinker, I can always go to AA, but if it turns out I'm not, and I'm just consuming beer 64 ounces at a time to avoid it going flat, then I'm gonna have a whole lot of flat beer to drink.  Rather than drinking a whole lot of flat beer, I decided to drink a lot of beer that still had flavor and carbonation.  Now that I've got a little bit of a buzz going, I'm thinking about opening up another one of these things.  I'll be back within the hour to let everyone know how it worked out.

Here's an update.  I drank 64 oz of Extra Special Bitter, and 64 oz of Blueberry ale.  Then I smoked a double filtered 2 footer bong.  If I stop making sense in the near future, it's only because I started drinking screwdrivers and white russians.  Put me back on a solid beer and whiskey regimen and I promise to be good.

According to my shrink, someone who drinks more than 2 drinks in one sitting and/or more than 10 drinks in one week is a heavy drinker.  He did not specify how much alcohol is in "one drink".  So in theory one can start ordering quad-shots at the bar and drinking wine out of big-gulp cups from the gas station when at home, and not be considered a heavy drinker, right?  The 64 oz. beer should pass by the same logic.

In retrospect, I think that last night went well.  No flat beer, and a damn good buzz.  This morning was another story.  All in all, I think I drank about 1.5 gallons of beer last night.  But I only opened 4 bottles the whole night.

Drinking doesn't agree with me as much as smoking fine bud does... but I do enjoy a good white russian.

White Russians are excellent, especially when you're watching The Big Lebowski.

"one drink" is equal to one ounce of hard liquor, or 12 ounces of beer, or 6 ounces of wine.

If you open a large container of beer and don't want to finish the whole thing, don't despair, there are many household uses for superfluous alcohol.

Mix beer into a beef and vegetable stew or a cheese fondue, or use it to steam mussels.  Or share some with your dog.

Champagne can be used to poach or saute fish (best with white, light fish).

My boyfriend has recently started marinating EVEYRTHING in Grey Goose vodka (beef, pork, ect...), and the meat turns out really delicious.  Especially when served with a dirty Grey Goose martini.

Bonus- stuff a Xanax into the olive of that martini, it's called a Xantini.  Your friends will marvel at your ingenuity.

What does "superfluous alcohol" mean?  If it means what I think it means, it's gotta be an oxymoron, like leftover crack.  Man, you KNOW there ain't NO SUCH THING as leftover crack!

GoodtoBeFree -- If you're serious, you really hate your liver.

Yeah, if you're serious, you're an alcoholic.

What you do or don't do about that is your business, not mine.

I'm not going to preach at you about it.

Just, well, if you're drinking 64 oz beers at a setting, once a week or more, it's not so it won't go flat.  It's because you want to drink that much beer.  They sell beer in 12 oz cans or bottles, you know.

Yeah, you're a binge drinker and an alcoholic, if you wondered.

Again, your business what you do or don't do about that, as long as you don't drink and drive.

Julie, first off, alcoholics are people who admit they can't moderate their desire for alcohol.  If anything, it would be more accurate to call me a drunk/pothead.  Anyways, I wouldn't read too much into these posts.  I enjoy my beer as much as the next guy, as well as my bourbon, scotch, tequila, rum, wine, etc., I just wanted to add some humor to the thread.
I don't know how many of those stupid "this is what 1 drink is" posters at college, as well as all the other silly "binge drinking" info that was on every wall of every building.  I just can't take it seriously anymore.  I'm 5'11" and 280lbs, 5 beers in one night just makes me take extra trips to the can.  On the other hand, some people can't even drink that much without getting sick.  By the "5 drinks at a time" logic, a girl who weighs 100lbs is drinking in moderation if she gets loaded on 3 beers a night, but I would be a binge drinker, for drinking a 6 pack in the same time period, even though I'll barely have a buzz going, regardless of how often or how much I drink, and she'll be completely shitfaced on a nightly basis.
I really hate it when people try to quote statistics like that with absolutely no context, and no concern for the multitude of factors that go into a person's decision to consume alcohol or anything else.  Rather than discussing the stupid "5 drinks" rule, I felt like saying something humorous.
And no, I don't hate my liver anymore.  It went on strike for a while, but we resumed negotiations and reached a settlement.  I agreed to follow a couple of safety regulations and improve working conditions, and my liver agrees to push back retirement until at least 65.  And just to straighten things out, I know I'm not preventing the beer from going flat.  But it takes 2 64oz beers and a lot of bong hits to reach a level of intoxication where the voices in my head stop, and sleep becomes theoretically possible.  Usually I just converse with the voices and drink lots of coffee so I won't fall asleep at the wheel, but every once in a while it's nice to be merry and cheerful and sleep through the night without having flashbacks.  By the way, I know you're not trying to preach, I just figured I'd elaborate for the hell of it.  I think that substance consumption among program survivors is a topic that merits discussion.
